Before he kick-started his film career, Bill Murray showcased his versatility on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ He worked on the show until 1980, before landing a role in the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise. It was his stint on the comedy show that led Drew Barrymore to approach him for the role. She believed his comedic flair would add charm and eccentricity to the film.

However, little did she know that an on-set fight would completely shift the behind-the-scenes dynamic altogether. As the crew began filming, several interpersonal conflicts popped up. One of these involved Murray making drastic changes to scripts without the consent of actors and directors.

It was partly why the actor got into a heated argument with Lucy Liu, his co-star on ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ There were also reports of a physical altercation between them, which the actress denied and refuted later on. Her statements were an exposé that highlighted Murray’s underlying toxicity and entitlement.

As reported byDeadline,’ Lucy Liu addressed the on-set clash a few years back on the Los Angeles Times’ ‘Asian Enough’ podcast about the ordeal. The details mentioned that Bill Murray hurled “inexcusable and unacceptable” insults at her. It was right after the crew learned that he had rewritten the script. The abuse and insults were verbal, as he reportedly took a dig at Liu.

“I get why you’re here [pointing to Drew Barrymore], and you’ve got talent [pointing to Cameron Diaz]…but what in the hell are you doing here? You can’t act! [pointing to Liu].” However, Liu did not address this comment. Instead, she spoke about her confrontation with Murray on the podcast, noting that she stood up for herself and did not regret it.

The incident alone reminded her of her mother’s heated scuffle with a condescending sales agent, a part of her childhood memories. Meanwhile, this was among many incidents that highlighted Murray’s history of hostility and aggression over the years.

In case you were wondering who gave Murray his nickname “Murricane,” it was none other than Dan Ackroyd. The lore behind this is that he fought with Chevy Chase behind the scenes. Was it a first? Yes. Was this the last time the actor faced controversy?

Obviously not, especially with how the situation escalated on the set of ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ The franchise axed Murray, but his verbal altercation with Liu wasn’t the sole reason. Before his replacement by Bernie Mac, he argued with the directors and actively refused to take part in shooting, especially since Liu was there.

Eventually, both the director and Drew Barrymore, along with the crew, stood up in favor of Liu. In the past, Murray came under public scrutiny following s–ual misconduct with a female crew member on the set of ‘Being Mortal.’ It reached a $100,000 settlement, with the film being scrapped entirely.

Moreover, the actor once threw an ashtray at Richard Dreyfuss on the set of ‘What About Bob?’ It was a heavy object that narrowly missed Dreyfuss, but the incident prompted the director to halt production. The event ultimately raised concerns about Murray’s disturbing on-set behavior.

Murray’s on-set behavior troubled many of his peers, co-actors, directors, and showrunners. The exploded ego was on full display in the wake of all those nasty incidents. In Richard Dreyfuss’s case, the actor’s volatility was at its worst. Murray even joked about it, saying he enjoyed annoying his co-star. Dreyfuss, on the other hand, forgave the actor.

Years later, his aggression resurfaced when Murray made headlines during the NYC theater event. The controversial incident, which dates back to 2025, involved a fan who bumped into the actor. He apologized to the actor, but the ‘Ghostbusters’ star accused him of physical assault.

The internet was quick to respond to the incident, calling out the actor for his mood swings. However, a few fans supported him for his stance on personal space. What do you think of Murray’s fight with Liu? Do you think it was blown out of proportion, or was the actress right?
