‘For All Mankind’ recently concluded its fifth season on a high note. Kelly Baldwin’s (Cynthy Wu) death at the end of the season reduced everyone to tears. It was a rollercoaster of emotions in every single way.

But the episode also left viewers with a question: Is the show introducing aliens? Amid the ever-growing curiosity, the showrunners addressed this burning question in their latest exclusive interview. Read on to catch the full scoop!

In an exclusive interview with Slashfilm, showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi responded to the ‘For All Mankind’ finale, especially the last scene. Wolpert explained, “As she’s stepping into that lake, her steps are triggering these microbes to glow and surround her in a way that people do here on Earth in terms of stepping into the ocean and being surrounded by those microbes.”

“We think they found this one little sample of microbial life on Titan, and what she steps into at the end is that there’s so much more,” he added. “It’s not just this one little puddle that this moon is teeming with life.” In the last scene, Kelly walks towards the methane lake and into it. She discovers the microbes amid the bioluminescence, leaving her in awe.

With no oxygen left to sustain her life, she gives up her life by staying behind. Her discovery of these methane-based microbial cells represents groundbreaking research. Her sacrifice doesn’t go in vain, as she paves the way for future research on Titan, which is Saturn’s moon. The entire sequence of Kelly’s last walk as she sinks away towards death is brilliantly done.

The creators elevated the moment by pairing it with the synth music playing in the background, deepening the narrative’s momentum. This raises the question that so many fans have been waiting for an answer to: Will there be aliens in the show in the sixth season? The answer is yes, but the showrunners have a rather pragmatic, grounded, and realistic approach to it.

Kelly has dropped humanity’s biggest revelation by discovering the supposedly ‘hidden’ lake on Titan. It implies the possibility of life beyond Earth, and bioluminescence pretty much explains it. The phenomenon usually occurs when a living organism emits light through a chemical reaction that converts chemical energy into light. A great example of this is a bioluminescent beach.

Nedivi addressed the approach he might take to the entire thing, especially given speculation about alien life on Titan. “When it came to this discovery at the end, we did a ton of research to make sure this feels grounded,” he said. “It’s sort of become more science fiction, a little more fantastical, but I still feel, despite that, we try very hard to keep it as close to science as possible at this point.”

The entire sequence would remind you of Avatar’s bioluminescence, which adds to the fantasy aspect. Here, too, the ecstasy seen on Kelly’s face, coupled with the music, made the moment surreal. It is understandable why viewers would want to see the show dive deep into the realm of anomalies.

So, while the show will bring in the concept of aliens, it will be highly pragmatic. It will also steer clear of fluff, as confirmed by both Nedivi and Wolpert. Are you excited to see how it all unfolds? Drop your theories in the comments below.
