You have got to know when you have overstayed your welcome. It’s surprising when even fans of beloved TV shows reach the point where they just want it to end.
But that is the biggest sign that something has gone seriously wrong. Nothing tests a TV show quite like time. Longevity can be a major strength, but some shows just never seem to get the hint. Here are the top 10 biggest TV shows that dragged on for far too long.
10. The Office (2005-2013)

Sure, it is an iconic sitcom with an unmatched legacy. But even ‘The Office’ struggled to know when to say goodbye. When Steve Carrel left along with his iconic character Michael Scott, the show should have taken the hint.
His absence left a massive hole in the series, and the writers somehow thought turning Andy Bernard into the next branch manager would work. It absolutely didn’t, and as it derailed more and more in the last two seasons. It was very clear that the show had overstayed its welcome.

9. How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014)

For a story supposedly being told to his children, Ted Mosby certainly took his time to get to the point. ‘How I Met Your Mother’ stretched its central story across nine seasons, and we certainly didn’t need that.
The sitcom was actually supposed to be concluded many times during its run due to low viewership, but it completely missed its timing. Instead, it kept going on and on for the worst, ultimately ending with that criminally disappointing finale.
8. 13 Reasons Why (2017-2020)

How did such a short YA novel ever become a source material for a four-season television show? ’13 Reasons Why’ was practically made to be a limited series. Its first season felt complete and meaningful.
But Netflix kept expanding it, pushing the show into increasingly bizarre territories and even changing genres along the way. Some stories are not built to continue, and ’13 Reasons Why’ is the proof.
7. Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017)

At some point, ‘Pretty Little Liars’ seemed to lose track of its own story. The writers just kept making things up as they went along. While watching, it often felt like even the writers themselves had no answer to Alison’s disappearance.
So, they kept piling on the most sensational twists until the mystery reached a point that made no sense. The result was a huge mess, and a spiritual predecessor to ‘Riverdale’.
6. Riverdale (2017-2023)

Speaking of the devil itself, ‘Riverdale’ actually started strong. It began as a moody small-town murder mystery. But, eventually, the only thing that anyone who watched the show remembers is just how wildly bizarre its storylines were becoming.
Somehow, the show went from murder mysteries and serial killers to superpowers, time travel, and musical episodes. We lost the plot somewhere between that hideous Gargoyle King and the organ-harvesting cult, and the whole thing just feels like one big fever dream now.
5. Glee (2009-2015)

Few shows have experienced a fall from grace like ‘Glee’. When it first premiered, there was nothing else quite like it on TV. There was great music, sharp comedy, unforgettable performances and wildly entertaining teenage drama.
But the show simply refused to end. It lost that unique identity, and later seasons just felt like a broken record that kept playing the same song over and over again. After the original New Directions graduated, it was a repeat of those same tropes and formulas, and it seriously affected the show’s legacy.

4. Dexter (2006-2013)

Spending nearly a decade watching Dexter Morgan get away with murders after murders was always going to test viewers’ patience. ‘Dexter’ began as an excellent dark comedy thriller. But after season 4, the show just started piling one cringy storyline after another.
It was clearly time for this guy to retire. Instead, it kept going, and when the crime thriller finally did end, it completely butchered everything with that infamous finale.
3. Grey’s Anatomy (2005-)

At this point, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is the biggest case in television of “why is this still on?” The iconic medical drama is far past its expiry date. It is actually a wonder how they are still running this show.
One of the biggest reasons the series needs to end is because of its cast turnover. At the same time, it is heavily relying on overly dramatic and sensationalised storylines to keep itself alive at this point. ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is legendary, undoubtedly. But someone desperately needs to pull the plug on it now!
2. The Walking Dead (2010-2022)

This is that one show where even its actor seemed to know when it was time to leave. ‘The Walking Dead’ ran for so long that, at one point, many people genuinely believed it had already been cancelled long ago.
The only positive takeaway from this huge runtime? It gives some hope that humanity might survive a zombie apocalypse far longer than we earlier expected.
1. The Simpsons (1989-)

Few shows have a legacy as iconic and groundbreaking as ‘The Simpsons’. A pop culture phenomenon in its own right, the animated sitcom has been running for more than three decades now.
But the newer episodes rarely feel as funny or fresh as the show once was. It is just mediocre at best, and that is a serious hit to the show’s legacy. Sure, we love ‘The Simpsons’, but not enough to keep it going forever.
