Sean Penn Gives His Oscar To Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky
American actor Sean Penn has reportedly given away one of his two Oscar awards to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. He has done so in order to show his support amidst the Russia-Ukraine war. The Oscar was given as a symbol of strength during his third visit to Ukraine.
The ‘Mystic River’ actor asked Zelensky to hold onto the award until the end of the war, hoping for Ukrainian victory. In a video shared by Zelensky’s office, Penn is heard saying “It’s just a symbolic silly thing, but If I know this is here with you then I’ll feel better and stronger for the fights. When you win, bring it back to Malibu.”
How Did President Volodymyr Zelensky Respond To The Gesture?
Zelensky initially refused to take the Hollywood actor’s Award at first, but gradually accepted it, and replied “We have to win.” After the exchange, Zelensky wrote in a post, “Sean brought his Oscar Statuette as a symbol of faith in the victory of our country. It will be in Ukraine until the end of the war.”
As mentioned in Scroll.in, “I’ll feel much better knowing that there’s a piece of me here“, the two-time Academy Award winner said. The Ukrainian President presented Sean with a new award at the meeting, the Order of Merit of the III degree for his long-lasting support of Ukraine. He also added the actor’s name to the “Walk of the Brave” in Kyiv, which honors leaders of other countries supporting Ukraine.
