On Monday, Elon Musk took to Twitter to write: “They trained illegally using Twitter data. Lawsuit time.” This tweet was directed toward Microsoft over claims that they used the company’s data for their training.

It came in response to the announcement that Microsoft’s advertising platform made about the company ending its support of Twitter. This is mainly because of the changes needed in Twitter’s payment to access its Application Programming Interface (API).

Though Musk’s legal threat is still unclear, one can assume he is not happy with OpenAI using Twitter’s data to train their products like the chatbot ChatGPT.
OpenAI has received significant financial backing from Microsoft. The advertising platform of Microsoft has stated that it will “no longer support Twitter” from April 25th, 2023.

Musk has been very vocal about ChatGPT and the rampant use of artificial intelligence. He has slammed Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates for backing OpenAI which developed ChatGPT.

Last month, the Tesla CEO remembered his time meeting Gates in 2016 when the former was one of the co-founders of OpenAI. “‘I’d been meeting with the team from OpenAI since 2016…” –from Bill Gates’ essay The Age of AI Has Begun. It’s big when someone like Gates is so bullish on AI. Also notable that MSFT has been tracking this so closely for so long,” he said.

In a different tweet, Musk wrote: “I remember the early meetings with Gates. His understanding of AI was limited. Still is.” Musk left OpenAI in 2018 because of the conflict of interest that may arise in the future for Tesla’s involvement in AI.
