Katie Ledecky made America proud on Wednesday as she added another gold medal to the nation’s collection of wins at the Paris Olympics 2024. The swimmer not only clinched the top spot but also tied the record for most Olympic medals won by a U.S. woman athlete.
The legendary swimmer outpaced the competition, finishing a comfortable 10.33 seconds ahead of France’s Anastasiia Kirpichnikova, who claimed silver with a time of 15:40.35. Germany’s Isabel Gose rounded out the podium with a bronze, clocking in at 15:41.16.
With this victory, Ledecky has set the record for the most Olympic gold medals by an American woman, which was previously held by fellow swimmer Jenny Thompson. It also puts her in a tie with Thompson for the most medals by an American woman in Olympic history, bringing her total to 12.
As happy as America is about her win, Ledecky also opened up about her achievement by expressing pride and gratitude over it. “I’m just so honored to represent our country,” she said, while also adding that she draws inspiration from past female athletes.

Before her Wednesday’s win, she had already secured seven gold, three silver, and one bronze Olympic medals, with a recent bronze in the 400m freestyle in Paris. She is also the captain of the 2024 U.S. Olympic swimming team, and her leadership shines as much as her performance under the water does.
