Snapchat Users’ AI Posts Story And Stops Responding To Message In A Scary ‘Rogue’ Move

It feels like the Age of Ultron is happening for real. Technology is a tricky thing, it can either make the user handicapped or independent. Earlier this year, Snapchat introduced a chatbot called My AI which is powered by OpenAI and uses the same underlying technology as Chat GPT.

This chatbot is available worldwide and is meant to answer users’ messages in a friendly way. It can give suggestions for cool places to go and fun lenses to try out. Moreover, it can have conversations and reply to the snaps users send to it. But recently My AI did something that scared the users.

Snapchat users in the United States as well as from across the world complained that the messaging app’s AI chatbot faced some troubles on Tuesday night. My AI, in particular, uploaded a cryptic Story on its profile and stopped responding to text chats, sparking concern among many users.

Earlier this year, My AI chatbot was made available to all users worldwide. Its primary function is to respond to users’ messages like a buddy and suggest places to go. Unfortunately, it briefly stopped working on any of these functions and instead started responding to all chat messages with the same standard response: “Sorry, I encountered a technical issue.” But additionally, My AI is said to have uploaded its first and only Story to its profile. Users from the United States could not view My AI’s narrative since it was erased. Still, video uploaded by some users on social media indicates it lasted approximately one second. The story displayed a flat beige area with another light flat color in the top quarter of the screen, leading users to speculate that it could be a wall or a  ceiling.

Users all around the around were baffled by the little stunt that Snapchat’s AI pulled. One X user Brian Long, who posted his reaction to the situation, told Insider that he believes that My AI’s change in behavior could have been “just a marketing stunt by Snapchat”. “I do think it’s kind of scary that we are getting closer and closer to the time where something we create follows its own mind,” Long also added.

During an online FAQ, a Snapchat spokesperson said that “they are constantly working to improve and evolve My AI”. He also warned that My AI’s responses may include “biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading content”. According to the Google Trends data, there was a notable spike in searches for “delete Snapchat”.
