Why Will Elon Musk-Led Twitter Not Allow Promotion Of Other Social Media Platforms?

A new venture, but the same old chaos! Twitter’s purchase of Elon Musk has not been proving profitable for either Tesla or the platform. The promises that the new CEO made before the buy are far-fetched. The $44 billion deal was the riskiest bet, but since he has taken that step, he is in full swing to revamp Twitter with his mission ‘Twitter 2.0’. To do so, he has taken some radical steps. Since he completed the deal, Elon Musk has fired more than half of his global employees.

The reasons were varying to reduce the headcount at the company. Many were fired due to growing losses, some were removed due to non-adherence to Twitter’s rigorous working policy, and a handful were fired for disagreement with the CEO. But, he has been continuing to enhance the users’ experience with some tweaks, which so far have not been fruitful. The platform is already facing the brunt due to the face of the microblogging site i.e., Elon Musk which includes losing advertising revenue as the advertisers pull out. Now, the Tesla owner has announced another restrictive policy, and the users are not very welcoming.

On December 18th, 2022, Elon Musk left Twitter users confused. It all started when Twitter suspended the computer scientist Paul Graham’s account when he posted the new Twitter policy link and said that he will depart from Twitter and join Mastodon. The new policy of Twitter said that it will suspend the accounts of users who will link to other platforms’ content on Twitter. The platforms include Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, Mastodon, Post, Tribr, and Donald Trump’s Truth Social.

Earlier, Twitter Support tweeted about its policy to prohibit any linking to other platforms, but later it updated its policy. One of the users pointed out that Twitter should ban only those users who “solely” use the platform for promoting their social media platforms. So, Musk replied to the Twitter thread, “Policy will be adjusted to suspending accounts only when that account’s *primary* purpose is promotion of competitors, which essentially falls under the no spam rule”.

Twitter’s Support account wrote, “We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter”.

It continued, “Specifically, we will remove accounts created solely for the purpose of promoting other social platforms and content that contains links or usernames for the following platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr, and Post”. However, the exception will be that these platforms can promote/advertise paid content.

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, he has taken many leaps resulting in great falls. The introduction of the $7.99 Twitter Blue subscription was the first major failure. The platform allowed anyone to have a blue check and added premium and exclusive features. But, the new plan led to the emergence of many parody accounts and impersonators.

Due to this, he took down the plan but reintroduced in December 2022 with new exclusive features like editing the tweet and 1080p videos. Tesla shareholders and stakeholders have criticized his new role as the CEO due to its heavy impact on the electric car venture. He completed his Twitter deal selling billion-worthy stocks of Tesla. But, the revenue on Twitter has been super affected due to the many erratic decisions of Musk.

Now, on Sunday, he conducted a poll asking the users whether he should give up his position at Twitter. As of writing, 56% of its users agrees that he should step down as the “head of Twitter”.
