Queen Elizabeth II’s Funeral Cost Around $200 Million
Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral was held on September 19, 2022, and the state funeral was the first in the U.K. after former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1965. The cost of the funeral was estimated to be around $200 million.
The figure was revealed by the treasury on May 18, 2023. Several world leaders alongside dignitaries attended the funeral for around 10 days following the death of Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96. Many others came to Westminster Hall to witness the monarch lying in state.
Chief Secretary to the Treasury John Glen stated that the priority of the government was the smooth operation of these events and they also tried to ensure the safety and security of all those who came for the funeral.
However, netizens find the cost to be too extravagant and many suggested that the taxpayers’ money could’ve been used to help the poor.
