Why Princess Anne’s Children Don’t Have Royal Titles?

Princess Anne, also known as Princess Royal, is the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. That makes her the only sister of King Charles III. Princess Anne has two children with her first husband Captain Mark Phillips.

Currently, her two children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall are 44 and 41 years old respectively. However, unlike the children of her brother, King Charles, they do not have any royal titles. So why is this? Let’s take a look right here.

Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips had two children- a son Peter in 1977 and a daughter Zara in 1981. However, unlike their cousins, they never received any royal titles. This was decided by Princess Anne herself.

She wanted to give her kids a normal life and childhood away from the humdrum of paparazzi and royalty. So she decided to not give them royal titles. “I think it was probably easier for them, and I think most people would argue that there are downsides to having titles,” Princess Anne told Vanity Fair. “So I think that was probably the right thing to do.”

However, this did not prevent them from being a regular part of Royal functions. Peter and Zara have been a fixture at royal events. And not giving them Royal Titles has been a good thing for them as said by daughter Zara. “I’m very lucky that both my parents decided to not use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do,” Zara told The Times.

You might have spotted Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall at King Charles’ coronation. The siblings attended the ceremony but did not stay back during the procession or palace balcony appearance. So let’s take a closer look at them.

Queen Elizabeth’s first grandchild and the first royal to be born was Peter Phillips. However he is not a working member of the royal family and makes his own living. Peter has mainly worked in sports management. He has worked with companies like Jaguar, Williams F1 racing team, the Royal Bank of Scotland and SEL UK.

Zara means ‘bright as the dawn’ in Greek and this was suggested by her uncle. Zara followed in her mother’s footsteps and became an equestrian. She even earned a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics and later on became  a director at Cheltenham racecourse. Both siblings share a strong bond with their cousins- Prince William and Harry
