House of the Dragon’ Season 3’s biggest mysteries may have been revealed, and fans are left wondering what will happen to Rhaenyra Targaryen‘s story. The new episode seems to imply that the dragon, Sunfyre, who killed Rhaenyra in Fire & Blood is dead. And this could drastically change the trajectory of the HBO series.

It’s not the first time the show has altered the source material. However, this could have a far-reaching impact on one of the most pivotal moments in the Dance of the Dragons.

Sunfyre’s Fate Might Affect Every Endgame Theory

In Season 3, Episode 3, Daemon Targaryen tells Rhaenyra that Baela discovered Sunfyre “long dead and decaying” during her search. If it is true, it is a huge contrast to Fire & Blood, where Aegon II’s dragon manages to survive the Battle of Rook’s Rest, recovers slowly, and is an important part of the war.

The announcement has immediately led to speculation among viewers. One of the most notorious scenes in the books doesn’t seem to be happening the same way in the series, and it leaves new questions about how the series plans to resolve Rhaenyra’s story.

However, of course, HBO hasn’t revealed Sunfyre’s body on screen, which leaves room for doubt. It is quite possible that the dragon is alive, or the show is deliberately misleading audiences before revealing the truth later in the season.

If Sunfyre really is gone, then there’s another possibility that comes to mind. ‘House of the Dragon’ doesn’t have to give up the general concept of the story; it could just swap out the dragon. A theory among fans is that the Cannibal, the notorious wild dragon of Dragonstone, may be introduced.

If Aegon II somehow claimed the Cannibal, it could preserve the tragic direction of Rhaenyra’s story while giving the series its own unique spin on events. The fearsome dragon would also be in line with the growing gloom that envelops his character as the civil war grows.

However, for the time being, it’s all speculation. HBO has been known to do the unexpected, and each episode of this show has proved that. Whether Sunfyre returns or another dragon takes center stage, one thing is certain: ‘House of the Dragon’ has successfully turned one of the story’s most well-known moments into one of its biggest remaining mysteries.
