Arya Stark’s Biggest ‘Game Of Thrones’ Mystery Has No Answer In George R. R. Martin’s Books

What exactly did Arya Stark discover west of Westeros? The honest answer is that ‘Game of Thrones’ never tells us. In the series finale, Arya abandons Westeros and sails into the Sunset Sea to explore uncharted territory. It is a fittingly adventurous ending for a character who never wanted to be confined by traditional expectations.

However, readers of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire know that this conclusion has no direct foundation in Arya’s published book storyline. Her fate remains unresolved, and her journey toward becoming a Faceless Man in Braavos is still underway.

Book Arya Is Still In Braavos, Not Exploring The World

By the end of A Dance with Dragons, Arya is still in Braavos, training with the Faceless Men. She has regained her sight after being blinded as punishment, but she has not abandoned her identity as Arya Stark or begun planning an expedition across the Sunset Sea.

In fact, the idea of exploring what lies west of Westeros is a show-original addition. In Season 6, Arya tells Lady Crane that she wants to discover what lies beyond the known world. The conversation establishes her adventurous spirit, but Martin has not published a corresponding storyline in which book Arya expresses that ambition.

That distinction matters because the novels give Arya a very different set of immediate challenges. Her struggle to balance her Stark identity with the Faceless Men’s teachings remains unfinished. Turning her into an explorer might eventually make sense, but readers cannot yet treat that outcome as book canon.

Elissa Farman Already Tried Sailing West

The books do, however, offer an intriguing precedent. In ‘Fire & Blood’, Elissa Farman sails west aboard the Sun Chaser in search of undiscovered lands. She discovers three islands named Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visenya before continuing west and disappearing.

Years later, Corlys Velaryon reportedly believes he has spotted her weathered ship in Asshai, far to the east. This suggests Elissa may have sailed around the world, although her ultimate fate remains unconfirmed.

So, the claim that nobody has ever returned from sailing west needs a qualification: Elissa never returned to Westeros, but her ship may have reached the opposite side of the known world. Arya’s television ending borrows the spirit of exploration without providing an answer to the mystery.

Whether Martin will ever send her west remains unknown. For now, book readers are still waiting to discover where her story truly leads.
