Is ‘Succession’ Based On A True Story? Meet The Real Family Who Inspired The Show

The HBO hit ‘Succession‘ is a dark-comedy satirical show which dropped the curtains with the fourth and final season. Although ‘Succession‘ runs on the same lines as the 2017 soap opera ‘Dynasty’ with a family patriarch and his children proving their worth to inherit the company. As ‘Dynasty’ was a reboot, ‘Succession’ seems to be based on a true story.

Before Logan Roy, there was Rupert Murdoch – the media mogul and owner of News Corps. The creative team of ‘Succession’ drew inspiration from the Murdoch family as it inhibits their world from its core to setting up a right-wing news network to its familial conflicts and the constant race of succession. According to the show creator Jesse Armstrong, they just aimed at the story unintentionally mirroring reality. Meet the real Murdoch who inspired the show.

The patriarchs of the million-dollar worth company, Murdoch and Roy from ‘Succession‘ both are immigrants, although Rupert inherited and expanded the media company, Logan started from scratch. Both of them have gone through multiple divorces, Rupert married four times meanwhile Roy is married for the third time. Apart from that Murdoch and Roy both are politically involved and share ties to the Republic Party. Both of them also have a handful of successors, Rupert has six children and Logan has four.

Despite the similarities, Rupert Murdoch and Logan Roy share different personalities. While Roy is brash and loud, Murdoch is soft-spoken on many occasions. Murdoch is more of a newspaperman who has utilized other business ventures to help keep his papers from drowning. While Roy is shown to be interested in exerting power and expanding his business conglomerate.

Unlike the patriarchs, Elisabeth Murdoch and Shiv Roy are extremely different people. The only similarity between them might be their father owns a media empire. Also Roy’s husband, Tom Wambsgans is loosely based on Elisabeth’s first husband, who was a public relations executive Matthew Freud. Although Elizabeth was rumored to be the potential successor to her father, it seemed she established an empire all by herself.

Elisabeth Murdoch is not as politically involved as Shiv Roy. Roy is a left-leaning political fixer who worked for presidential candidate Gil Eavis for quite some time. Due to the political views clash with Waystar, Roy eventually left politics and focuses on the family business on ‘Succession‘.

Just like Kendall Roy, Lachlan Murdoch is the eldest son of the media tycoon and the possible successor to his father’s empire. Lachlan is the co-chairman of News Corp and CEO of Fox Corporation. Since the age of 18 Lachlan has been absorbed into the family business but took a sabbatical from News Corps which might have inspired Kendall’s departure from Waystar Royco.

Unlike Kendall Roy on ‘Succession‘, Lachlan Murdoch did not wage any aggressive war against his father. The only similarity between them might be their dedication to building a vast empire and always in constant competition with their younger siblings. It is obvious that creating Kendall Roy was inspired by Lachlan Murdoch, but to keep the character in a grey area, Kendall is shown to be battling substance abuse.

    James Murdoch Vs Roman Roy

While the patriarch’s children are in constant competition towards the race of inheritance, there should be a spoilt brat with a history of controversies and rebelliousness. For Murdoch, it is James and for the Roys, it is Roman. James is linked with Murdoch’s family’s biggest humiliation: the News International phone hacking scandal.

While Roman Roy is seen more as an outsider due to this unorthodox system and is more of a right-wing, James Murdoch is a rebel supporting the center with a liberal political view. Both James and Roman are the rebels of their families which might damage their position for running in the race of inheritance.
