One of the DCU’s biggest future villains may have been subtly set up in ‘Lanterns’ episode 6. While James Gunn’s series has mostly focused on a grounded murder mystery and the strange events surrounding Rushville, the latest episode confirms that Sinestro is no longer sitting safely behind the bars of a cosmic prison.
That little tidbit of information might have far-reaching implications for the Green Lantern Corps, maybe even the entire DCU.
Sinestro Is Finally Free
Previously, Sinestro was shown to be jailed in the intergalactic prison nicknamed “Space Azkaban” by Guy Gardner. He was imprisoned after trying to make a coup on Oa and killing one of the Guardians. Episode 6 changes everything by revealing that someone has broken him out.

His rescuer wasn’t identified, and even Guy doesn’t know. The interesting thing about the situation is that Hal Jordan couldn’t have been responsible. When Sinestro broke free, Hal was still locked up on Earth in the 2016 Rushville incident.
So, one of the Green Lantern’s most popular enemies is roaring back into the universe with no word as to who wanted him free. And that feels like something the show wouldn’t introduce without a plan.
Is The Sinestro Corps Coming?
The strongest indication might be the mid-season trailer for the ‘Lanterns’, where Sinestro is interacting with John Stewart in an alien facility or foundry. That immediately brings up an interesting thought: is Sinestro constructing something?

Later, Sinestro builds his own team, using fear, and they use yellow power rings. If the DCU is going in that direction, then ‘Lanterns’ may be setting up for a much bigger cosmic battle. The concept was even hinted at in the 2011 ‘Green Lantern’ film, where the yellow power ring was embraced by Sinestro at the end of the movie.
Gunn’s DCU may now want to rethink that idea and give it a lot more space to grow. Another season of ‘Lanterns’ featuring Sinestro and the Yellow Lanterns would also provide the franchise with the chance to venture out of Earth and delve deeper into the DCU’s cosmic mythology.
Until now, there are still two episodes remaining, so it’s not clear what exactly Sinestro’s escape was for. However, one thing is becoming more and more apparent: Sinestro’s story in the DCU is likely just getting started.
