House of the Dragon’ season 2 had Daemon Targaryen feeling somewhat removed from the war raging on Westeros, at least for much of the season. The character’s haunted experiences at Harrenhal gave him some depth. But many viewers were missing out on the bold and unpredictable warrior from the first season.

The great news for fans? Season 3 is all set to bring back that version of Daemon.

Recently, Matt Smith revealed plans for Daemon’s next adventure, hinting that the Rogue Prince is making a comeback to the spotlight. Daemon, who was caught up in visions, self-reflection, and isolation much of last season, is now back to his old ways of making an impact on the battlefield and upending the political landscape.

It was good. I think both character and actor were sort of happy to be back on home turf. Daemon, I don’t know, his addiction and his predilection towards violence, that is his burning desire,” he explained.

Season 2 delved into another aspect of Daemon. He was not on the battlefield, he was not fighting enemies, but he was faced with his own fears, regrets, and desires within the haunted walls of Harrenhal. That plot line was great for giving viewers a more nuanced look at the character.

However, it also kept him from being in the company of many of the show’s key players. Some of Daemon’s most memorable interactions weren’t even with people but with strange visions and symbolic creatures that populated his dreams.

Matt Smith said he and the character were pleased to leave that behind. Violence and conflict are a part of Daemon’s nature. He likes action more than introspection and loves chaos. So, in season 3, he will be back in the thick of the war.

As the Targaryen civil war rages, Daemon’s return to the battle lines is just in time. Season 3 will be bigger in battles, more political in maneuvering, and reunite him with several important characters. Trailers have already revealed Daemon’s journey across Westeros and even back to King’s Landing, where he hasn’t been since the beginning of the war.

The action should bring back the fast-paced vibe that many fans had hoped to see from the character during season 1. Most importantly, Daemon will once again be interacting with a much broader range of characters. Those relationships and rivalries have always been some of his best story elements.

House of the Dragon‘s season 3 will likely be a reminder to viewers of why Daemon was one of the most interesting and unpredictable characters in the franchise in the first place. Fans who want to get a glimpse of the Rogue Prince, then the wait might be over.
