One of the biggest challenges facing any ‘Supergirl‘ adaptation is avoiding a simple comparison to Superman. After all, Kara Zor-El has many of Clark Kent’s powers, hails from the same planet, and is now living in the same universe.
However, that similarity is what made it so important for Milly Alcock to make Supergirl different. With the DC Universe still in the process of being developed, it seems that Kara’s path will not be one of emulating Superman, but instead creating her own identity.
Kara And Clark Aren’t As Similar As They Seem

When asked about her approach to the job, Alcock said she started out seeing Kara as Clark Kent’s alter ego. This attitude influenced her acting style and made her scenes with David Corenswet’s Superman more interesting.

“I think for me, the way that I approached Kara was just so independent of Clark, and that’s what made those scenes when I did get the opportunity to work with David so exciting,” she shared. The film does not depict the cousins as being exactly the same, but celebrates them for their differences.
Kara and Clark have a Kryptonian heritage, but have been influenced by their experiences in very different ways. That contrast has been one of their most interesting dynamics in DC Comics for a long time. Superman is typically seen as a beacon of hope and optimism, while Supergirl’s narratives often delve into themes of loss, anger, and displacement.
She has a special way of knowing the world around her, as she remembers Krypton in a way that Clark never could. That’s exciting for fans, as it means that Kara can be more than Superman’s cousin.
The DCU Is Giving ‘Supergirl’ Room To Shine

The upcoming movie appears set on continuing to focus on Kara’s story. Superman will show up, but his appearances will be minimal. That’s a significant move for the future of the DCU. Shared universes can sometimes suffer from the “older hero overshadowing newer hero” problem.

However, that doesn’t seem to be a problem with Supergirl. The screenplay was written by Ana Nogueira, who has also pointed out the difference between the two heroes, making their personalities an integral part of the story’s foundation.
The movie isn’t turning to Superman for its power, but instead on Kara’s distinctive voice and perspective. That’s refreshing. ‘Supergirl’ has been proving herself to be a force to be reckoned with for years, and the DCU is looking to keep that tradition alive.
