A good protagonist is the backbone of any TV show. But that doesn’t necessarily mean every central character should be perfect, heroic, or always lovable. In fact, we love flawed TV show protagonists who still make us want to root for them.
But these characters didn’t get that memo. Unfortunately, sometimes protagonists just cross that line between being complex and completely insufferable. It is safe to say that if we ever meet these people in real life, we will be running the opposite direction. Here are the top 10 most insufferable TV show protagonists of all time.
10. Jerry Seinfeld in ‘Seinfeld’

There is something deeply ironic about disliking Jerry Seinfeld, considering the character is essentially a fictionalized version of the actor himself. Still, Jerry’s casual selfishness and emotional detachment are so hard to watch. He always treats other people’s feelings as inconveniences and prioritizes his petty grievances. He simply doesn’t have any genuine empathy, a trait that is essential in protagonists.

9. Elena Gilbert in ‘The Vampire Diaries’

This was indeed one love triangle we were all invested in, until it just grew insufferably annoying. Elena’s self-righteousness is so hypocritical. She is always quick to judge everyone else’s mistakes but rarely acknowledges her own. Honestly, whenever Katherine jokes about Elena being a big baby, it is genuinely entertaining to watch.
8. Debbie Gallagher in ‘Shameless’

Standing out as insufferable in the Gallagher family is quite an achievement. Everyone in this family is frustrating, but Debbie is on another level. Mostly because she was actually a nice person in the beginning. Somehow, she ends up attempting to trap a guy into having a baby. In later seasons, she is either constantly screaming or fighting with someone.
7. Dr Gregory House in ‘House M.D.’

It is clear that Dr Gregory House was meant to be a brilliant, cynical doctor whose sarcasm and abrasive personality are unconventionally entertaining. However, in reality, he is just the most exhausting person to watch. The way he insults his patients and colleagues, and even his one loyal friend, just feels needlessly cruel. Meeting such a doctor in real life as a patient would have us running away from the hospital.
6. Emily Cooper in ‘Emily in Paris’

It is true that ‘Emily in Paris’ is that one show you can turn off your brain and watch, but Emily Cooper is genuinely impossible. She rarely makes any sensible decision, repeatedly crosses boundaries, and never listens to her boss or coworkers. Yet, despite constantly creating problems, she somehow always escapes every mess completely unscathed. Emily is one of the most irritating cases of the “chosen-one” trope.
5. Rory Gilmore in ‘Gilmore Girls’

Rory is just accustomed to constantly getting praise, always being the center of attention, and always getting exactly what she wants. She never learns from her mistakes or experiences any meaningful growth. She was indeed a complete mess in the later seasons, but actually Rory was insufferable from the start. Why would you give up your dream school that your mom can barely afford all because you saw one good-looking guy?

4. Carrie Bradshaw in ‘Sex And The City’

Carrie Bradshaw is unbelievably entitled, shallow, and spoiled. And it was apparent from the start in the way she treated the people closest to her. As a friend, she is completely self-absorbed, and as a partner, she is disrespectful and mostly cheating. Every new episode of ‘Sex and the City’ was just watching Carrie discover a brand-new low point to hit in her life.
3. Sheldon Cooper in ‘The Big Bang Theory’

Sheldon Cooper may have started as an endearingly clueless and socially awkward character. But very soon, these quirks became increasingly difficult to tolerate. Honestly, he was just selfish and a bully, with an exhausting need to control everyone around him. His adult version is frustrating enough, but even the younger version is a complete gremlin.
2. Ross Geller in ‘Friends’

Every single time Ross was trying to do anything in this show, we were all groaning out loud. From saying another woman’s name at the altar to disrespecting his girlfriend at her workplace and even trying to kiss his cousin, Ross crosses so many lines. On top of it, his pretentious nice-guy attitude, sense of entitlement, and the constant whining and temper tantrums only make him harder to tolerate.
1. Ted Mosby in ‘How I Met Your Mother’

Although ‘How I Met Your Mother’ has an ensemble cast and there might be much debate around who is actually the main character, it was Ted who was actually telling the story. Unfortunately, he turned out to be the Ross Geller of his generation: selfish, judgmental, and unwilling to take any responsibility for his actions. In the entire show, he is either pining for his best friend’s fiancée or manipulating some other girl, and it was just exhausting to watch.
