Peacock has officially pulled the plug on ‘Ponies‘ after just one season. The Cold War spy dramedy starring Emilia Clarke from ‘Game of Thrones‘ and Haley Lu Richardson from ‘The White Lotus‘ got strong reviews but never pulled in enough viewers to keep it going.

The decision came five months after the show premiered on January 15. Fans were upset, and the creative team is still hoping the show might get another chance somewhere else.

Ponies earned a 94% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 83% audience rating, but those good numbers did not turn into the viewership the show needed. It never made it onto Nielsen’s weekly streaming top 10 chart. Industry analysts say that is a big reason Peacock decided to end it. Streaming platforms have been quick to cancel expensive period shows that do not catch on with a wide audience right away.

The show was set in Moscow in 1977. Clarke played Bea, and Richardson played Twila. They were two American secretaries working at the embassy. After their spy husbands died under strange circumstances, they ended up working as CIA operatives. The title Ponies stood for “Persons of No Interest,” which showed how the intelligence agencies overlooked them.

Co-creators Susanna Fogel and David Iserson took a big risk with the first season. They ended it with several cliffhangers. Bea and Twila were held at gunpoint by the KGB. Bea’s husband, who everyone thought was dead, showed up alive. Her love interest Sasha, was badly hurt. The creators said in a recent interview that Peacock gave them the “blessing” to end the season that way, and they were betting on getting a second season. “This was the only version we shot,” they said.

After the cancellation news came out, co-creator David Iserson wrote an emotional post on Instagram. He tried to give fans some hope, saying the decision “ends, for now, a journey that started over seven years ago.” He also wrote, “Goodbye to Bea and Twila for now. I hope we all get to visit them again.”

Iserson talked about the difficulties the show faced. He called it “a period show with two female leads and an unusual tone” and said it was “the kind of thing that is hard to make in this business.” He asked fans to keep watching and insisted Ponies “is not like anything else on television.

The timing of the cancellation is frustrating because the show had award potential. ‘Ponies‘ was considered a “solid contender” in the comedy categories for the 2026 Emmy Awards. Voting was set to close just days after the news of the cancellation broke. Richardson also got a Gotham Television Awards nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series.

Fans have been sharing their anger on social media. Many could not believe the show was canceled, given its strong reviews and loyal following. “Gutted about this news,” one fan posted. Another asked, “What tf happened?

The show also starred Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Vic Michaelis, Nicholas Podany, and Petro Ninovskyi. Universal Television produced the series, and it is still available to stream on Peacock. Now, depending on how it does during awards season, there is still some hope that ‘Ponies‘ could get picked up by another platform.
