Complications have become a part of our lives these days. Whether it is professional life or personal life, we tend to complicate every aspect of it. But ‘Schitt’s Creek’ was a refuge for many to unwind from the complications that we have created in our relationships. It presents you with a dysfunctional family and a town that instills hope in them. For David, Patrick becomes his hope and anchor.
Queer love stories have had gruesome endings on celluloid or have been over-sexualized in the long-storytelling format. But, with ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ a queer love story is presented like any other love story. From the first conflict to sharing their vows in front of their loved ones, they grow, with one another and us. The show has normalized instead of revolutionized storytelling for someone from the LGBTQIA+ community. There were conflicts, laughs, and tears, but most importantly, there was this expression of love that was not over the top, but it struck a chord and gave hope to every homosexual couple. One of the moments of the expression was when Patrick proposed to David.

Love comes knocking at the door when you ‘lease’ expect it! Yes, David came to file for the lease of the general store, but he found a partner—business and romantic. The chaotic voicemails lead to the filing of the lease, which makes Patrick interested in David’s business, and consequently, it etched a love story in our hearts forever.
Queer love has always been precarious— of society, surroundings, and oneself —to express. But Dan Levy is such a brilliant writer that he makes us feel that it is a regular love story, but some revolutionary moments pioneer a new era for LGBTQIA+ storytelling. David and Patrick‘s love language is physical; they kiss passionately, and the expression of intimacy that has been suppressed by laws and due
to the lawlessness of certain institutions in some countries is note-worthy. With everything, Dan gave us a proposal scene that we, as queers, waited for our lives.
In the 13th episode of season five, titled ‘Hike,’ Patrick takes David for a picnic. When they arrive at the hiking spot, David is dissatisfied with the choice of place. He expects the picnic to be in the English Gardens, courtesy of ‘Notting Hill!’ So, the entire hike, David frowns and complains, making Patrick regret coming on the trip and packing cheese and food in two full bags (how magnanimous Patrick is!). A branch gets stuck in Patrick’s shoes when they try to turn back. David tries to remove it, but finally acknowledges Patrick’s efforts and agrees to continue the hike.
When they reach a scenic view, David insists on laying down the picnic blanket, while Patrick resists continuing the picnic. When David rummages through the picnic bag, he finds a champagne bottle with a box of 24-carat rings. Patrick goes onto his knees and says that when he moved to the town, he used to always come to the place to ruminate if the guy he was in business with had the same feelings as him.
Patrick continues, “I didn’t know if that guy had the same feelings or if I’d ever be able to muster up the courage to let him know how I felt. And now, here he is. The love of my life is standing in front of me. And this just felt like the perfect place to ask you to marry me.” (excuse moi!)

Actor Dan Levy Explains The Origin Of The Proposal Scene
Of course, David accepts the proposal, and he locks his lips deep onto Patrick’s lips, resuscitating a hope for love for us queers! Thank you, Dan. During the interview with GQ before the sixth season of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ dawned upon us, Dan Levy explained how he wrote the beautiful, powerful proposal scene in the fifth season.
Dan Levy said, “I was lying in bed. I keep a notebook by my bed because I do a lot of thinking while I try to fall asleep.” Levy talked about the eureka moment when Patrick gives the golden rings to David that he always wears.
He continued, “I was in the middle of trying to fall asleep, and I thought to myself, ‘He gives David four rings. He gives David gold versions of the rings that he wears every day’. And I started weeping in my bed, alone, in the dark. It was very sad for me.”
