“Some Nights It Was Really Hard”: Joey King Says Her Holocaust-Based Show ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ Was “Deeply Personal”

Actress Joey King emerged as a fan-favorite teenage icon after starring in ‘The Kissing Booth‘. While the show was renewed for two more seasons after the success of its first part, other actors that starred in the film franchise, including Jacob Elordi from ‘Saltburn‘, went on to do some great films afterwards.

With her turn now to rock the screens with a portrayal different than the teenage girl she played in ‘The Kissing Booth‘, Joey King is a Jewish woman navigating the harrowing aftermath of the Holocaust in her latest project, ‘We Were the Lucky Ones‘. Though she is not a religious person, the 24-year-old actress said she felt a profound connection to her Jewish heritage because of the film.

During a recent interview with People, Joey King opened up about her experience working on a show deeply rooted in her religion. As a woman who takes pride in her heritage, particularly through its rich traditions and family gatherings, she is grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Jewish culture onscreen.

I don’t know exactly what I believe in,” she said. “I’m still figuring that out. But I do feel a really loving tie to my Judaism. It’s the tradition that is my favorite part, because I always say I love all the holidays and all the traditions because it’s just a reason to get together with my family.”

I do feel lucky to be part of a show that celebrates Jews. I was always really proud to be who I am, but working on a show where it’s the theme 24/7, you are dealing with this heavy subject matter and your own background tied with it, it was a really beautiful thing,” she added.

Joey King acknowledged the emotional weight of the subject matter, asserting that it “pulls at your heart in a different way” compared to other projects she’s worked on.

There were some nights where it was really hard, and I would call my sisters or my husband or my mom and just talk through what the day was like, call my husband on FaceTime while we watch a comedy special together on FaceTime or something like that,” the actress said.

That was surprising for me ’cause I’m usually very good at separating them. Obviously, my ancestry has a big tie to that, so it was a very deeply personal set to be on,” she added. ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ is based on Georgia Hunter’s book of the same name. The movie was filmed for seven months.

Despite the emotional toll of the project, King considers being on set her “happy place“. “The job is my favorite thing in the world,” she said. “I love what I do so much, so for me, all I really want to do is just be around for a long time and keep working. I hope I’m still acting until the day that I’m on my deathbed.”

King’s rise to fame, particularly with the success of The Kissing Booth‘ franchise, had gotten her into the spotlight as a pop culture icon. Now, with ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’, she hopes to make a lasting impact through a rather serious Hulu series. The show is now streaming on Hulu.
