‘The Last of Us‘ quickly became one of the most successful and well-received television shows of 2023. HBO’s post-apocalyptic horror series is based on the eponymous video game which was also highly successful. One of the most important characters in both the show and the games is Joel.
Played by Pedro Pascal in the series, Joel is someone who is accompanied by Ellie in a world ravaged by the infection caused by the cordyceps fungus. But one question is what he was doing for a living before the virus outbreak. Let’s try and find out the answer to this question.

Joel’s Profession In ‘The Last Of Us’
HBO’s ‘The Last of Us‘ tells the story of a world disrupted by a cordyceps outbreak. One of the main characters of this story is Joel Miller, played beautifully by Pedro Pascal.
Before the outbreak took place and he took up arms like many, Joel was a regular fellow living a normal life. He worked as a contractor and was involved in the construction of buildings. He tells Ellie when they are on their way to the University of Eastern Colorado.
In the video game, however, Joel worked as a carpenter along with his brother Tommy. Because of his traumatic past, he did not trust anyone easily and that’s why he kept his past life secret from others. As his bonding with Ellie grows, Joel eventually opens up and talks about his pre-outbreak life in episode six.

Joel’s Fate In The Show Vs. Video Game
In the final episode of the HBO series, Joel and Ellie are captured by the Firefly soldiers. They are taken to a hospital so that surgery can be performed on Ellie to get a cure for the virus.
Marlene tells Joel everyone and tries to convince him. But, he kills everyone and leaves the hospital with Ellie. On his way, he lies to Ellie about what happened in the hospital as he is sure she wouldn’t have wanted him to kill someone.
In the first part of the video game, Joel survives. But his luck runs out in the second one. Abby, a girl whom he and Tommy save, kills him. She was the daughter of the doctor whom Joel killed in the hospital and she manages to avenge her mother’s death.
