It has been impossible for ‘Sweet Magnolias‘ fans to ignore one major question over the past two seasons: What happened to Ty Townsend? After playing a central role in the Netflix drama for three seasons, Carson Rowland’s character gradually disappeared from the story before vanishing entirely in Season 5.
Now, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson has revealed the real reason Rowland is no longer part of the series and how his exit affected the story.
Why Carson Rowland Chose To Exit ‘Sweet Magnolias’

Ty’s disappearance did not come completely out of nowhere. During Season 4, the character spent much of his time away from Serenity while touring with his bandmate Olivia. While fans noticed that Ty appeared less often, many believed he would return in a larger role the following season.

Instead, Season 5 arrived without Ty appearing on screen even once. According to Anderson, that was because Rowland decided to move on from the series after Season 4. “It was his choice,” Anderson told Deadline when discussing the actor’s departure.
Sources also confirmed that Rowland had been balancing ‘Sweet Magnolias‘ with other projects. During the filming of Season 4, he worked on several outside productions, including the independent movie ‘The Queen’s Jewel‘. He also served as a co-executive producer on ‘The Testament of Ann Lee‘ while continuing his work on the Netflix drama.
How The Show Explained Ty Townsend’s Season 5 Absence

Rowland’s departure created a challenge for the writers because Ty remained an important part of the show’s ongoing story. At the end of Season 4, Ty and Annie finally admitted their feelings and started a relationship after years of friendship and romantic tension.

Even though the couple had a major argument before Ty left for Europe with Olivia, there was no indication that their story was ending. In fact, when Season 4 premiered, Anderson spoke about the future of their relationship.
“There is inherent tragedy in young love, because when we fall in love fully for the first time, we truly believe that love conquers all, but it is part of growing as individuals and growing as a couple to understand that a real relationship takes real work, so they have work ahead of them,” she told Deadline last year.
Because Rowland chose not to return, the writers had to change their plans. Rather than removing Ty completely from the story, they made his absence part of Annie’s emotional journey throughout Season 5.
“His presence was important, and his absence was important for us to deal with. I wanted to honor the journey that Annie has been on, even though it took this unexpected turn because of someone else’s decision.”
Is The Door Still Open For Ty Townsend?

Although Rowland did not appear in Season 5, ‘Sweet Magnolias‘ stopped short of giving Ty a permanent goodbye. Throughout the season, the character remained part of the story even while living off-screen.
Ty missed Annie’s graduation and sent flowers instead, prompting her to finally reach a breaking point. “Just texted him to thank him for the flowers and tell him I’m done,” Annie said. She then added, “Why do people say happy endings? Endings aren’t happy.”
As Annie tried to move forward and explore new romantic possibilities with Blake and Noah, Ty unexpectedly reappeared in her life. He first sent her a “Miss you” text message and later tried to FaceTime her during Helen and Erik’s wedding. Annie never saw the call because she was dancing with Noah.
The scene immediately sparked questions about a possible return. When asked whether the moment was setting up a future comeback, Anderson declined to reveal any plans. For now, fans finally have an answer about why Ty is missing from ‘Sweet Magnolias‘ Season 5.
