While Chloe Zhao’s Oscar-winning drama ‘Nomadland‘ (2020) seems to have been quite appealing to Academy voters, the film failed to impress one particular Hollywood starlet. It’s none other than Jennifer Lopez, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
During her recent appearance on her ‘Office Romance‘ co-star Brett Goldstein’s podcast, the pop star/actress didn’t hesitate to reveal that the movie was among the worst pictures she had ever watched. The major reason? The film just didn’t align with Lopez’s taste in cinema. Read on to catch the full scoop!
Jennifer Lopez Explains Why She Disliked ‘Nomadland’

Contrary to popular opinion and high praise, Jennifer Lopez couldn’t stand watching ‘Nomadland.’ In fact, she labeled it the “worst” movie while chatting with Goldstein on the Films to be Buried With podcast. She softened her hot take, saying, “It’s hard to say ‘worst’ because it’s a beautiful film.”

Featuring Frances McDormand in the lead role, the acclaimed indie movie earned two Oscars for both Best Actress and Best Director categories. “You can tell from my taste in movies what I think about this,” she said per Variety, implying that the film fell way below her cinematic interests.
Lopez is known for preferring upbeat, entertaining musicals and comedies. The 56-year-old singer revealed that her favorite movies include ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Flashdance,’ and even thrillers. “It’s not why I go to the movies,” she explained.
“I like musicals, I like romantic comedies. I like thrillers, you know? And [Nomadland] is a slow-moving thing about grief, and there’s no escapism to it. And I do like some movies like that…but that one I just didn’t,” she added.
Lopez Praises Frances McDormand Despite Her Overall Criticism

Based on Jessica Bruder’s nonfiction book ‘Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century,’ the film tells the story of a widow who loses everything during the 2007-2009 economic downturn. The character, played by McDormand, begins living nomadically in her van while touring the United States.

Despite having no interest in the movie’s plot or overall concept, Lopez showed respect for the leading star’s acting skills. Describing McDormand’s performance as “amazing,” she maintained her stance, “She deserves all the Oscars. But I just didn’t enjoy it. It’s just not for me.”
“It’s just a taste thing. And I know we need movies about grief! I understand,” Lopez continued. When Goldstein suggested it might be because of her reluctance to witness the tragic theme on-screen, she agreed. In fact, she feels the same way about the horror genre.
However, the actress admitted her love for Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s ‘Together,’ which convinced her that the genre has “evolved.” As for fans wishing to see Jennifer Lopez in her element, her new workplace comedy, ‘Office Romance,’ is streaming on Netflix.
