TV show cancellations happen all the time, and it is easier to accept them when we get a proper ending. But these shows left us wanting more, with so many unanswered questions, unfinished stories and fan bases that still refuse to let go.
Honestly, at this point, we are ready to take anything for closure. After all, ‘Twin Peaks’ got a massive comeback and that too more than a decade later. So, what is stopping us from holding out hopes? Here are the top 10 most heartbreaking series cancellations we will never stop mourning.
10. The Great (2020-2023)
In the season three finale of ‘The Great’, we see Catherine entering a new chapter in her life. Finally free from Peter and the enemies who constantly challenged her authority, she is ready to rule entirely on her own terms.
Sadly, we never get to see what kind of a ruler Catherine might have become without anyone holding her back. It is truly a royal shame since the show still had so much potential and a loyal fanbase.

9. Gentleman Jack (2019-2022)
The story of ‘Gentleman Jack’ was beautifully crafted and it felt like it was only the beginning. Seeing Anne Lister’s story portrayed with such honesty was just so meaningful. It offered a kind of representation we don’t often see in TV, inspiring us to embrace the best of ourselves.
But HBO decided to drop the series. It has been revealed that the BBC is still open to continuing the show if they find a replacement for HBO as co-production partner and that is enough to keep us hopeful.
8. Julie And The Phantoms (2020)
Netflix’s ‘Julie and the Phantoms’ had everything we could ever ask for: a talented cast, actually good music, lovable, well-written characters and a genuinely engaging story.
What is worse is that the show ended on a huge cliffhanger. After all this time, campaigns are still going on to get the series to come back, and we can’t help but hopefully root for it.
7. The Society (2019)
This phenomenal YA dystopian series seemed destined to continue after Netflix officially renewed it for a second season. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic complicated production and brought massive financial pressures.
While the circumstances were understandable, it remains incredibly frustrating that a series with so much potential has still not found its way back to us. All we can do is wait and hope.
6. Shadow And Bone (2021-2023)
This one is especially frustrating because cancelling ‘Shadow and Bone’ means losing the chance to bring the entirety of Grishaverse to life. Leigh Bardugo’s literary world is filled with so much material waiting to be explored.
One of the biggest reasons we are still mad at Netflix is that ‘Shadow and Bone’ was able to successfully remain faithful to the books while also being compelling towards newcomers and that is very rare. On top of it, ending it on such a major cliffhanger just feels wrong.
5. Our Flag Means Death (2022-2023)
Truly, ‘Our Flag Means Death’ deserved the chance to end on its own terms. It was a genuinely unique and inventive premise and had groundbreaking LGBTQ+ representation.
On top of it, the show was beloved by critics and fans alike and that’s why the abrupt cancellation is so especially painful. Season 2 never felt like a conclusion, and we deserved to get a final chapter.

4. My Lady Jane (2024)
Prime Video’s ‘My Lady Jane’ had everything fantasy series fans could need: brilliant writing, well-done tropes and an exceptional cast. Yet, it was cancelled after just one season.
The series rightfully started a huge backlash, with even George R.R. Martin himself coming forward to show his support. But ‘My Lady Jane’s cancellation just continues the frustrating pattern of ambitious fantasy shows always being cut short.
3. Mindhunter (2017-2019)
Another series nobody expected to become quite this exceptional, ‘Mindhunter’ was the show we never thought we needed so badly. It brought an intense, unsettling look into the minds of serial killers with sharp writing and deep psychological insights.
It isn’t a surprise that it still has a devoted fanbase. But since David Fincher announced a confirmed cancellation, we just need to stay satisfied with the fact that the show’s fate will never change.
2. Anne With An E (2017-2019)
At this point, we have trust issues with Netflix. ‘Anne With An E’ remains the biggest disappointment when it comes to TV show cancellations. The series already started rocky when it decided to take bold creative liberties by exploring the struggles faced by indigenous communities, as well as heavy themes like racism and gender. But that is what made us respect this show so much.
‘Anne With An E’ continues to have a fiercely loyal fanbase and is still a huge cultural phenomenon. It is painfully obvious that the show was never designed to end so soon, and the cancellation only resulted in countless storylines left unresolved.
1. Hannibal (2013-2015)
In a very rare turn of events, somehow the series ‘Hannibal’ was able to bring back ‘The Silence of the Lamb’s Dr Hannibal Lecter to life once again. Only Mads Mikkelsen could bring such depth to the character after Anthony Hopkins’ iconic portrayal.
Sadly, the cat-and-mouse game only lasted for three seasons. It ended with Lecter and Will Graham’s fate still uncertain, leaving with so much potential. In today’s streaming networks, the show would reign if it decided to ever make a comeback.
