‘The Last Of Us‘: All Types Of Infected
Runners
The first stage of being infected is a runner. Their physical form closely resembles that of the zombies that are usually seen. However, they are not slow and tired like them. Instead, these runners are aggressive and run to attack, on hearing the slightest noise. These types of infected have their eyes first infected leading to their poor eyesight. Being at the earliest stage of being infected, these remain runners from two days to two weeks.
Stalkers
This second stage of infected is called Stalker and is one of the most horrific forms of the infected. More aggressive and faster, these beings have fungal infections erupting out of their head and the upper part of their face. As the name suggests, they attack only when the prey comes really close to them. The infected remain in this second stage for two weeks to one year.
Clickers
When infected with the Cordyceps fungal virus for over one year, then these move into the third stage of being infected, the Clickers. As the name suggests, these types make clicking sounds as they use echolocate to move around obstacles and find prey, since they’re now completely blind. These infected will probably make a lot of appearances in the show. These zombies have a very grotesque appearance as their head is completely covered in fungal growth.

Bloaters
Several years into the infection, then the infected becomes a bloater. At this stage, these zombies are completely filled with fungal growth, subsequently dulling their echolocation abilities and making them slower. The fungal growth becomes armor for these zombies and they become undefeatable. However, being older, these become more dangerous and rare.
Shamblers
When in a wet environment, the infected after several years becomes a Shambler than a Bloater. The two are similar in appearance. But for the Shambler, the final growths are frozen and their mouths are wide open making it unable for them to bite and spread the infection. Thus they release explosive bursts of spores out of acidic pustules covering their bodies. These zombies can be less expected as they only appear in a wet environment.
Rat King
The Rat King, with a grotesque and horrible appearance, is formed decades after being infected. Thus these monstrous zombies can be expected to appear in the later season of ‘The Last Of Us’ series. These creatures are the result of zombies growing into each other over time and forming a huge and terrorizing one.
