One of the weirdest aspects of ‘Lanterns’ is the open hostility of the Guardians towards Hal Jordan. From the outside, it can feel like Hal is constantly being treated as the problem, even when his instincts keep leading him toward uncomfortable truths.
Yes, Hal has been arrogant, reckless, and at times disrespectful to John Stewart. However, the Guardians’ frustration with him seems to go much deeper than his personality.
The Guardians Aren’t Angry At Hal For Breaking Rules; They’re Angry Because He Questions Them

Even Hal’s interaction with John was in that tension. John has begun to understand that it’s not always the right thing to do to follow orders, while Hal is becoming dismissive and stubborn. And that’s where the Guardians’ complaints about Hal’s oath and vow become interesting.

The conflict is even more apparent in the ring story. The Guardians seem to be more concerned about who gets the ring than letting the person who wears it earn the right. John’s choice to step away from the ring after a short period wearing it is significant because it demonstrates that he does not take the authority of the ring lightly.

That’s why Hal’s constant defiance is important. He may not be right every time. However, as the Guardians continue to command obedience, the results of their own decisions start to have repercussions, and Hal’s refusal to give up on asking questions grows more difficult to ignore.
Maybe the real problem isn’t that Hal Jordan is too difficult. Maybe it’s that the Guardians aren’t used to someone noticing when they’re wrong.
