Pochita is one of the most beloved characters not only in ‘Chainsaw Man‘ but also in the anime world. His cute looks, kind nature, and his love for Denji melted the hearts of the fans. Although Pochita starred in the first episode only, he still became one of the most loved characters in the anime.
Pochita used to be the much-feared Chainsaw Devil in hell and other devils used to be scared of him. However, he lost most of his powers and got turned into a dog-like creature with a chainsaw sprouting out of his head and a handle for Denji to easily hold, attached to his back. Before we get into why Pochita turned into a dog, let us learn who Pochita is.
Who Is Pochita?
Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil in ‘Chainsaw Man’. As the name suggests, Pochita embodies the fear of chainsaws. He fused with Denji to save his life. Before merging with Denji and becoming his heart, Pochita looked like an orange dog with a chainsaw going in the middle of his head. He had a handle-like structure emerging from his body which made it easy to hold him. Pochita is a little different from other devils, however.
For instance, he merged with Denji and in a way gave up his freedom to save Denji’s life without any selfish wants or anything in return. This is quite uncharacteristic of devils as they are by their very nature, selfish and cunning.
Also unlike most devils, Pochita wasn’t able to articulate his thoughts into words and communicated through barks and whines like an actual dog. After Pochita fused with Denji, he was able to send his thoughts directly to Denji’s mind and warn him about certain things.
Pochita listens to the cries of both humans and devils and helps them. He helped both Makima and Kobeni when they needed to be saved. Late in the series, he also sacrificed his own life to save Kobeni. Regardless of his nice nature, Pochita is one of the strongest devils in the series. He was the Chainsaw Devil who later got turned into a dog.
Why Did Chainsaw Devil Turn Into A Dog?
Pochita’s backstory has been a mystery even till now. Not many people know of the Chainsaw Devil and his powers and those who do, know only a little part. Makima and some other devils revealed that Pochita was known as the Chainsaw Devil in hell. He could erase devils by consuming them and the devils who were consumed by him could not resurrect anymore, meaning Pochita erased them from existence. This made him very strong and many devils feared him.
However, this power also made Chainsaw Devil the target of many other devils who wanted to kill him. Many devils tried to kill him but none succeeded. Ultimately the battle between the four horsemen, weapon devils, and Chainsaw Devil took place in which he almost died and was barely able to escape. He was reduced to ‘near-death form’ which is his dog from Pochita. He then mysteriously ended up on earth where he met Denji during his father’s funeral.
He grew close to Denji and started caring for him. It’s unclear whether he has memories of his life in hell as when the devil reincarnates in the human world after dying in hell, they have no memories.
