‘Demon Slayer’ recently released its third season which covers the swordsmith village arc. Even though the season isn’t over, fans are already eager for the next season. They wish to see more of the upper moons and Kibutsuji Muzan. Another fan-favorite character is Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Yoriichi is the only swordsman who was able to almost kill Muzan.
Fans love and admire him, but they are a little curious about one thing. They wish to know just how exactly the strongest swordsman who ever lived is related to the series’s protagonist, Kamado Tanjiro.
Who Is Yoriichi Tsugikuni?
Yoriichi Tsugikuni is the strongest swordsman who ever lived. He was the only person who was able to deal so much damage to Muzan, that he almost died. Muzan had to resort to running away because he was unable to defeat him. Yoriichi was alive almost 500 years before the current timeline of the show.
Yoriichi is the creator of the sun-breathing style. It is through this particular breathing style, that all the other breathing styles evolved. Yoriichi is the younger twin brother of Michikatsu Tsugikuni. Michikatsu later turned into a demon and became the upper moon 1, Kokushibo. Kokushibo used the sun breathing style to evolve his own breathing style, the moon breathing style.
Appearance-wise, Yoriichi had maroon eyes and red hair that he generally kept in a ponytail. His face was usually blank and he rarely showed emotion on his face. Personality-wise, Yoriichi is kind and calm. He does not show emotions but feels them like any other human. Another notable trait of his is that he is very humble. Despite being the strongest individual, he always considered himself to be ordinary and normal.
How Is Tanjiro Related To Him?
Kamado Tanjiro is the protagonist of the series. Apart from Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Kamado Tanjiro is the only person who was able to strike fear in the heart of Kibutsuji Muzan. When Tanjiro ran into Muzan in Asakusa, Muzan got scared after seeing his Hanafuda earrings. This is because Yoriichi had the same earrings.
Tanjiro is not related to him through blood. However, his ancestor, Sumiyoshi was saved by Yoriichi. Sumiyoshi stayed with Yoriichi ever since he was saved and saw him practice the sun-breathing style each day. He saw the movements and memorized them. Later, he passed down the sun-breathing style movements as a prayer dance.
Tanjiro saw his father Tanjuro Kamado perform this dance quite often. Tanjuro prayed and danced a prayer to the sun god. Along with the movements, the Hanafuda earrings were also passed down through generations in the Kamado family. Therefore, whilst Tanjiro and Yoriichi are not related by blood, Tanjiro’s ancestors knew Yoriichi personally.
