Meliodas is the main protagonist of the story and the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins. Their group is accompanied by the female protagonist, Elizabeth.
She was the one who was the first to seek out their help to save the country of Britannia from evil forces. Who Is Merlin?
Merlin carries the sign of the Sin of Gluttony. It is quite different from what we usually perceive as the demon form. Unlike the overly bulky and chubby form of a demon that we usually find in books, Merlin is an attractive lady. It will be better to state her as someone who has ‘beauty with a brain’.
She is also the one who suggests Meliodas form the group of the Seven Deadly Sins and recruit members suitable for them. It was later revealed that he along with Meliodas has been alive for 3000 years, and is the daughter of a powerful kingdom of wizards. She was revered as the brightest prodigy of the century, because of her ability in magic and perseverance.
Her prodigy status granted her immense strength but also pushed her into darkness. Many used her as a shield or weapon to accomplish their own goal. Until she met Meliodas and fell in love with her, Merlin didn’t believe in kindness or compassion.
Unfortunately, Meliodas already had someone else in his heart. Heartbroken, she later finds out about Chaos and devotes her whole being to resurrecting him, even if it means betraying and tricking Meliodas and the group.

Was Merlin A Villain From The Start?
No, of course, she wasn’t a villain from the start. She was simply a girl who fell in love with Meliodas and wanted to keep her youthful appearance to seduce him. In order to do that, she used magic to retain her current form. Though she knew Meliodas loved someone else, she found purpose in life through Chaos.
She learned that to resurrect Chaos, either the Demon King or the Supreme God will have to die. There has to be a power imbalance for the successful resurrection of the Creator. For this reason, she started plotting and gathering allies in 3000 years. Through Meliodas, she gained trustworthy teammates in the name of Seven Deadly Sins.
Merlin helps Meliodas and Elizabeth to retract and destroy the source of their curses, while also being the one to re-activate it again. After Meliodas defeats the Demon King, the curse that hounded the star-crossed lovers disappears. Unfortunately, their attack couldn’t finish off the Demon King. To once again urge the Seven Deadly Sins and Meliodas to destroy the King, Merlin re-awakened the curse of Elizabeth,
She thought that the group, especially Meliodas had lost interest in the Demon King, as their main motive – to erase the curse was lifted. Her re-awakening angered the whole group. She was successful in awakening Arthur as Chaos Arthur. Later she left with Arthur and didn’t appear for the rest of the series. Only her voice was heard, as Hawk asked her to guide him to Purgatory.
Whether the group forgave her for her sins, or if she ever pleaded or felt guilty for her actions, was not mentioned in the story anymore. She was stamped with the Sin of Gluttony as she wickedly achieved gifts from both the Gods (The Supreme God and Demon King). Her wanting more power and tricking Gods into granting them earned her the title of Gluttony. Her greed also incurred the wrath of the Gods in destroying her kingdom 3000 years ago.
