The anime ‘Given’ debuted in 2019 followed by release of first film in franchise the very next year. The series follows the story of Mafuyu Sato who slowly opens up his heart to people around him. His character development is one of the best part of this journey.
The relationship strings following this anime have been a huge hit. Not to mention Mafuyu dealing with his past and revealing why he is the way he is. His connections to Unenoyama the other protagonist of the series, and Haruki and Akihiko are worth mentioning.

Why Was The Guitar So Important To Mafuyu?
Fate starts playing its role through the strings of the guitar. Mafuyu and Yuki were in a relationship in high school. Mafuyu always used to hum a song. It made Yuki think that music brings happiness to Mafuyu. Shortly after, Yuki creates a band with two of his friends and becomes deeply involved with music.
Time passes by, and the rift between Mafuyu and Yuki slowly becomes visible. Due to an unfortunate confrontation, Yuki takes a harsh choice to attempt suicide. His death broke Mafuyu yet he wasn’t able to express his emotions.
Yuki played a really important role in Given. If it wasn't for Yuki and his guitar Mafuyu and Uenoyama wouldn't have met each other. Following Yuki’s death, his mother gave Mafuyu the guitar Yuki used to carry. Though the latter didn’t know how to play the instrument, he always took it with him and kept it by his side. His attachment to Yuki became the strings of the guitar that once broke.

How Did The Guitar Bring In Together Mafuyu And Uenoyama?
One day Uenoyama found his favorite napping spot taken by a strange kid with a guitar. Mafuyu was cuddling the guitar as he slept on the stairs. Little did they know that their encounter will bring a storm in Mafuyu’s life.
When Uenoyama found Mafuyu, he noticed that his guitar had a string broken. It was broken when Mafuyu stood in Yuki’s room and saw him pass away. He couldn’t express his emotions and broke the string of the guitar. It was Unenoyama who mended the broken string, thus barging into the life of Mafuyu.

From that point onwards, Mafuyu headed straight towards Unenoyama and chased him to become his mentor. Though irritated at first, Uenoyama starts teaching Mafuyu how to play the guitar. Later Mafuyu joins the band of Uenoyama, Akihiko, and Haruki. He becomes their lead vocalist. The relationship between these two only progresses with the story thereafter.
