What Are The Hashira?
The Hashira are essentially the strongest demon slayers in the corp. They are the pillars of defense that humanity has against Kibutsuji Muzan and his 12 demon moons. There are nine Hashira in total and each of them has a different breathing style. There is no requirement as to what breathing one must have to become a Hashira, however, the fire-breathing users and water-breathing users have always been a part of the nine Hashira.
The Hashira are at the top of the hierarchy in the demon slayer corps and they only bow down to the Ubuyashiki family. The Hashira generally don’t fight every demon, they fight demons that are so powerful that other swordsmen can’t defeat them. However, each Hashira is given a region to patrol. The Hashira are responsible for that area and they work to make it demon-free.
There are different ways of becoming a Hashira. A demon slayer can become a Hashira when they have killed over 50 demons or if they have killed a demon from the 12 Kizuki. Another way of becoming a Hashira is to be another Hashira’s Tsuguko. A Tsuguko replaces a Hashira when they retire or are killed.

Why Don’t Most Hashira Have The Demon Slayer Mark?
The Hashira are the strongest characters in the series and are most likely to awaken the demon slayer marks. The first person to awaken their demon slayer mark is Muichiro Tokito. He awakened his mark against Gyokko, the upper moon five.
The reason why most Hashira haven’t awakened the demon slayer is that there are certain conditions to be met for the mark to awaken. The demon slayer should have a heartbeat of over 200 beats per minute. In addition to that, their body temperature must be over 39 degrees. The slayer should also come in contact with someone who has already awakened the mark. The current timeline’s Hashira came in contact with Tanjiro which is why they were able to awaken their marks.
Muichiro Tokito was the first of the Hashira to awaken their marks. The other Hashira also awakened their marks in the manga. That part has not been animated yet. The Hashira before them were unable to awaken their marks because they didn’t have anyone who had already awakened their marks. Therefore they couldn’t come in contact with someone who had the mark. That is why most Hashira haven’t awakened their marks in the anime.
