Why Is ‘Another’ Considered The Perfect School-Horror Anime?

Another’ is a spine-tingling anime series. Its title as one of the best horror school anime proves to be on point as the characters, the setting, and the plot draw the ultimate series an anime can serve. Unnatural, spooky events seem to be the main companion of the students of the Yomiyama North Middle School. Unknown to his fate, the protagonist jumps into the middle of the typhoon without knowing what to expect next.

The gloomy school-setting song with the soundtracks makes ‘Another’ the cream of the crop amongst its several other competitors. The story follows the journey of Kouichi Sakakibara who is accompanied by Mei Misaki to uncover the veil of their classmate’s mysterious death and to stop evil from taking any more of his classmates’ lives.

After Kouichi’s transfer to his new school, he finds the atmosphere of his classroom rather twisted. Apart from the perfectly counted and available students, there’s always a chair left empty for someone in the class. He further notices that the teacher calls out the name of an extra student each time, with no response from anyone in the class.

Not too long after his transfer, many of his classmates start to die, implicating their family also. Later it is revealed that it is all due to a cursed place of Class 3, 26 years ago. 26 years ago, a student named Misaki Yomiyama passed away. Unable to accept the death news, the students started pretending that he is still with them.

They continued this act until graduation. Their actions resulted in calling evil spirits which later cursed the class dictating the lives of the now-innocent students. Each month after the curse activates one student is sure to die, or someone close to them. To stop the deaths, Kouichi joins hands with a mysterious girl Mei, and both struggle to overcome the challenges.

Mei was also the girl who the class decided to sacrifice. They thought if they ignore a classmate each semester, their curse will be less effective. Unfortunately for them, it just had no effect at all. Each scene in the anime is delicately and gruesomely painted red. They didn’t shy away from using the blood image along with the deaths of the characters. The gore element further supports this statement.

What Made The Ending Of The Series A Flop

Despite its unique picturesque, and plotline, the fans were extremely disappointed in the ending. Not only did the series not reveal the main cause and conditions to erase the curse, the further didn’t solve anything. The students decided to write down memory notes for future students so that they can solve and put an end to this endless cycle.

Since the beginning of the thrilling plot, it was revealed that there was the presence of another student who is supposedly dead but the classmates are unaware of it. They are unaware because their memories were altered. Nevertheless, the creepy feeling of an extra person in the room is sure to get to you at night.

The anime, all of a sudden, decided to let go of the main essence of the story, making the protagonist’s aunt the main villain. They reveal that Kouichi’s aunt with whom he’s been living is the extra person – the evil spirit.

While the viewers are excited to unfold the mystery behind the extra student, it turned out to be a teacher. This revelation wasted all the efforts that the team put through at the initial point. In a horror story if you don’t have perfect exposure to the mysteries with logical reasoning on a chilling note, then it’s a waste.
