Actor Armie Hammer has compared his high-profile cancellation and subsequent exile from Hollywood to a biblical crucifixion, saying he felt he was “already on the cross” as his career collapsed amid allegations of sexual misconduct and disturbing cannibalism fantasies.

In a candid interview, the 39-year-old ‘Call Me By Your Name‘ star detailed his spectacular fall from grace, his new life of financial struggle, and his tentative steps toward a comeback. When his late father urged him to fight back against the allegations that surfaced in early 2021, Hammer refused, explaining, “Look, dude, I’m already on the cross. The nails are in my hands. I’m not getting off this cross no matter what we do. And the more I struggle, the longer I’m going to be up here.”

Hammer’s career was derailed in January 2021 when an anonymous Instagram account shared explicit text messages allegedly from the actor detailing violent sexually dominant fantasies and cannibalism. In the weeks that followed, several women came forward with allegations. His ex-girlfriend, Courtney Vucekovich, described their romance as akin to “dating a wannabe Hannibal Lecter”. Another ex, Paige Lorenze, alleged he branded her and left her covered in bruises. In March 2021, a woman named Effie Angelova formally accused Hammer of raping her over a four-hour incident in 2017.

Hammer has consistently denied all criminal allegations, maintaining that his relationships were consensual. In April 2023, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office confirmed there was insufficient evidence to charge him.

The allegations led to immediate and severe professional consequences. He was dropped by his talent agency, WME, and his publicist. Hammer was removed from several high-profile projects, including ‘Shotgun Wedding‘ opposite Jennifer Lopez, Paramount+’s ‘The Offer‘, and a Broadway production of ‘The Minutes.’

In the interview, Hammer detailed the stark reality of his life after the scandal. Without agents or a publicist, he relies on a single entertainment attorney for contract work. He returned to Los Angeles, couch-surfed, and eventually landed in a 200-square-foot, rent-controlled apartment in Venice Beach with a Murphy bed. He later moved to a small rented house in West Hollywood, a far cry from his previous $5 million mansion.

Taking Responsibility While Rejecting Victimhood

While invoking a messianic metaphor for his public shaming, Hammer stopped short of casting himself as a passive victim. “I made these problems for myself. This didn’t happen to me by a fluke accident,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t do what people are saying I did. But I brought very dangerous and unsafe people into my life, and I pissed off people in my life — and here we are”.

Reflecting on his pre-scandal behavior, he admitted to struggling with “imposter syndrome” in Hollywood. “I used to call myself a consumer. Drinks, women, validation, experiences — I just wanted to consume. All of it. More, more, more,” he said.

Despite his significant fall, Hammer is attempting a return to acting. His first film role in five years came when German director Uwe Boll offered him a part in ‘Citizen Vigilante’. Hammer said he was so grateful for the opportunity that he cried. “It was just this moment where I was like: I’m going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything — other than my children,” he said. He added that he was so desperate to work again, he “would have done a f—ing cat food commercial”.

Remarkably, Hammer said he would not wish away the events that led to his downfall. “Honestly, no,” he said. “I remember the emotional state and the mental state I was in before all that happened. Healthy people don’t act the way I was acting”.
