Starring some of Hollywood’s biggest names, ‘Dune’ is one of the most successful movie franchises. The sequel ‘Dune 2’ is currently the highest grossing film at the box office. No other film has even come close to defeating it. The movie made a worldwide total of $711.8 million.
Usually the director should be happy with his film ruling the box office undisputed but Denis Villeneuve has other thoughts. Villeneuve has said that he is not happy that ‘Dune 2’ is ruling the box office single-handedly. Spoken like a true artist indeed. He wants to see more from his fellow directors and wants other movies to make an impact on the box office as well. So let’s take a look at what he said in more details.

Denis Villeneuve Wants To See More Movies Taking Over The Box-office
Hollywood has been failing to deliver some great movies as of lately. However, Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune 2’ has been ruling over the box office quite steadily for a bit now. Villeneuve was also honored with the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards recently.
That is where Denis Villeneuve talked about his thoughts on Dune 2 ruling the box office. “I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theatre, and I’m not just talking about Dune 2,” he said. “Of course, I’m talking about many movies. A movie like Civil War, for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theatre,” Villeneuve added.

The movie is based on Frank Herbert’s novels and has an absolute star studded cast. The cast includes Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and many more. Not only did the movie do exceptionally well at the box office, it also gained lots of praise from viewers. And director Denis Villeneuve is grateful for all the love and appreciation. He said, “I was lucky that Part 2 did reach the audience; I wish it would happen more often, honestly.”
He continued to express his disappointment on not having enough competition and wanting to see more great movies. “I’m disappointed to still be number one. … I hope soon that there will be other successes at the box office. I hope, sooner or later, that this summer box office will be much better,” Denis Villeneuve added.
