While adapting Homer‘s epic Greek saga is a massive task, if anyone can handle it, it’s Christopher Nolan. The man has won Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay for ‘Inception,’ ‘Memento,’ and ‘Oppenheimer.’ But even with all that success, Nolan’s own son remains unimpressed.
While discussing the writing process for ‘The Odyssey‘ during a recent interview, the director shared a hilarious story about his kids who keep him grounded. When Nolan intentionally tucked his prestigious Oscar awards away to keep his head clear, one of his sons couldn’t help but make him eat humble pie.
When Christopher Nolan Got Humble Reality Check

In his recent interview with BBC News, Christopher Nolan recalled an amusing episode with his kid. “My son walked into my office while I was writing on ‘The Odyssey’ and said, ‘Where are your Oscars?’” he said.

The filmmaker explained that his son had “been away” when he had won his Oscars for ‘Oppenheimer’ in 2024. “I said to him very seriously, ‘Well, I’m trying to write a new project and if I’ve got Oscars sitting there on the shelf, you know, think about how daunting that’d be,’” he added.
And then came a savage reply from one of Nolan’s sons. “He looked at me, and he said, ‘But you didn’t win for writing.’” This witty reply hit the heart of the director’s impressive awards collection.
Nolan’s 2024 masterpiece had won him Best Picture and Best Director, along with acting nominations for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. However, the elusive prize for screenwriting slipped through his fingers, landing with Cord Jefferson for ‘American Fiction.’
Even though Nolan already has two Oscars for best writing for ‘Memento’ and ‘Inception,’ an award from this particular golden category remains missing from his shelf. Meanwhile, Nolan did not specify which of his three sons had given his father this hilarious reply.
For those who don’t know, Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas, have four children: Flora, Oliver, Rory, and Magnus. The son in question could be his youngest, Magnus Nolan, who was not at the 2024 Academy Awards. Despite this reality check at home, Nolan remains focused on bringing to life one of the world’s oldest legends.
Reimagining Ancient Myth For This Generation

Later on in his BBC interview, Nolan explained his approach to adapting Homer’s ancient legend for modern audiences. “I’m adapting, I’m able to do whatever I want with it, really,” he said, adding, “I’m not bound by the language; I’m working beyond the language. I’m just looking at the story.”

He also explains why Odysseus’s adventure has remained relevant for several millennia. “I think this is why it sustains even though some of the values of it are obviously archaic and outdated,” he said.
“The story movements, the motifs, the ways in which human beings interact, they do have this timeless quality, and you can look at them through a modern lens.” This massive July 17 release features an all-star cast.
These include Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus fighting against Robert Pattinson‘s cunning Antinous, and Zendaya as Athena, the Goddess of wisdom.
