Matthew Perry‘s sudden death has put many of his fans as well as his family in a shock that has still not mellowed down. Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles cottage on October 28. The reason for his demise was recently revealed to be the “acute intake of ketamine“, which he was taking as a medicine to treat his drug addiction and depression.
While many of his family members and friends have spoken up about the kind of man and actor he was before his death, actor George Clooney – who is also Perry’s long-time friend – has now come forward with a shocking revelation about the show ‘Friends‘.
“He Had Simple Dreams”: George Clooney Remembers Teenager Matthew Perry
George Clooney and Matthew Perry were friends for decades. Clooney saw up close the complexities of the actor’s journey, particularly during his time on ‘Friends‘. Clooney was promoting his movie ‘The Boys in the Boat’ when he opened up about Perry’s battles with addiction during their respective stints on NBC shows.
Clooney recalled their early days when they played paddle tennis together while Perry was just a 16-year-old with dreams of gracing the screens. “I knew Matt when he was 16 years old. We used to play paddle tennis together. He’s about 10 years younger than me. And he was a great, funny, funny, funny kid,” Clooney shared.
Clooney said Perry’s dreams were simple. “All he would say to us, I mean me, Richard Kind and Grant Heslov, was, I just want to get on a sitcom, man. I just want to get on a regular sitcom and I would be the happiest man on earth,” Clooney said.

Why Matthew Perry’s Success On ‘Friends’ Did Not Bring Him Happiness
He recalled the time when Perry landed the iconic role of Chandler Bing on ‘Friends‘, while Clooney himself was working on another NBC sitcom ‘ER‘. Both the shows were filmed “side by side” on the same NBC soundstage.
Clooney, who guest-starred in a 1995 episode of ‘Friends‘, while recalling Perry’s struggles with substance abuse, said he has seen him in pain. In a rather shocking revelation, Clooney said Perry’s success on ‘Friends‘ did not bring him happiness.
“We just knew that he wasn’t happy and I had no idea he was doing, what, 12 Vicodin a day and all the stuff he talked about, all that heartbreaking stuff. And it also just tells you that success and money and all those things, it doesn’t just automatically bring you happiness,” Clooney said.
“You have to be happy with yourself and your life,” he said. “It was hard to watch because we didn’t know what was going through him,” Clooney further admitted.
Last week, Perry’s autopsy report revealed the cause of Perry’s death was because of acute effects of ketamine, with accidental drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects listed as contributing factors.
