In the beginning, Matthew Perry’s cause of death was mysterious. He had talked about being sober and days before his death he was posting cryptic messages on Instagram with Batman-themed captions. According to a toxicology report, Perry died because of “acute effects of ketamine.”

The effects of buprenorphine, a medication used to treat opioid use disorder, coronary artery disease, and drowning were among a few more reasons behind the death of the Friends‘ star. His death has been ruled as an accident, crossing out speculations of suicide.

Before his death, Perry was reportedly receiving ketamine infusion therapy for anxiety. The toxicology report goes on to say, “At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression.”

Prior to his death, Matthew Perry struggled with addiction for a long time. In his memoir titled ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing‘, the actor opened up about his addiction and wrote, “I would fake back injuries. I would fake migraine headaches. I had eight doctors going at the same time. I would wake up and have to get 55 Vicodin that day, and figure out how to do it. When you’re a drug addict, it’s all math. I go to this place, and I need to take three. And then I go to this place, and I’m going to take five because I’m going to be there longer. It’s exhausting but you have to do it or you get very, very sick. I wasn’t doing it to feel high or to feel good. I certainly wasn’t a partner; I just wanted to sit on my couch, take five Vicodin and watch a movie. That was heaven for me. It no longer is.”

He also added that he spent around nine million for his sobriety. Ever since those experiences, Perry swore that he was clean and had not taken any substance.

Recent reports, however, contradict that. Perry’s close friend claimed that he lied about him being clean. A friend of his told Mail Online, “He lied to everyone about being clean. He never was. It is very sad. You know, the biggest lie he told was probably to himself.”

Further, he said, “He could be quite a manipulative person when it came to his struggles with using, but it was such a struggle, such a battle, and he battled every day to the end.”
