Filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and actor, there are many roles taken up by Martin Scorsese. Over the last 50 years, the director has emerged as a major figure in the film industry. This inspirational figure has some disagreements with the comic book and franchise culture and he has been very vocal about it.
‘The Departed’, ‘Raging Bull’, ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’, ‘The Age of Innocence’, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘The Irishman’, and ‘Taxi Driver’ are some of the notable films steered by Martin Scorsese. Though one of the greatest icons in the film industry, the director has only one Oscar to his credit. He won the Academy Award for directing ‘The Departed’.
Comic Book Movies Remain Enemy To Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese admitted earlier of how the Marvel and DC superhero films are not sitting well with him. The ‘Irishman’ director had then compared the Marvel movies to the ‘theme parks’ and said that it didn’t belong to real cinema. Many filmmakers had sided with Scorsese when criticizing the comic book franchise. Back then the public, actors, and other filmmakers had also lashed out at ‘The Departed’ director’s opinion.
However, the 80-year-old has more to say. In his recent interview with British GQ, the filmmaker again talked of the same issue.“There are going to be generations now that think movies are only those…that’s what movies are,” he said. “They already think that. Which means that we have to then fight back stronger. And it’s got to come from the grassroots level. It’s gotta come from the filmmakers themselves,” the Academy Award winner added.

Christopher Nolan And Safdie Brothers To Save Cinema
Martin Scorsese points out the ‘danger’ that the comic book and franchise movies are ‘doing to the culture’. The ‘Killers of the Flower Moon‘ creator sees movies based on comic books as ‘manufactured content’. He equates these movies to films made by AI. Scorsese is concerned with what these movies have to offer as a final product.
“You’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean?” the director already has some big names in his mind. “Hit ’em from all sides, and don’t give up. Let’s see what you got. Go out there and do it. Go reinvent. Don’t complain about it. But it’s true because we’ve got to save cinema,” Martin Scorsese shared.
