Tom Cruise has built a career by taking risks on screen, but one of the biggest opportunities of his life came about because someone else refused to let him play it safe. Long before ‘Rain Man’ became an Oscar-winning classic, Cruise nearly missed a chance encounter that would shape one of the defining roles of his career.
The person who changed his mind wasn’t an agent, producer, or director. It was his younger sister, Cass, who convinced him to walk across a restaurant and introduce himself to Dustin Hoffman. What followed was a promise that seemed impossible at the time but eventually became a reality.
Tom Cruise Almost Didn’t Meet Dustin Hoffman
Cruise recalled having dinner with his sister in New York while Hoffman was starring in the Broadway revival of ‘Death of a Salesman.’ Cass spotted the Oscar winner across the restaurant and immediately urged her brother to introduce himself.

Cruise, though, wanted no part of it. “I don’t walk up to people and introduce myself,” he admitted, insisting he had no intention of interrupting Hoffman during his meal.
His sister, however, refused to let the opportunity slip away. “She was so pushy,” Cruise recalled. Eventually, she delivered an ultimatum that left him with little choice: “Look, if you don’t do it, I’m going to just go over, and I’m going to tell him who you are.”
Not wanting his sister to embarrass him, Cruise finally gave in. He nervously walked over and began, “Excuse me, Mr. Hoffman, I’m sorry…” Before he could even finish introducing himself, Hoffman looked up and simply replied, “Cruise?” “I went, ‘Yeah,'” Cruise recalled.
Rather than brushing him off, Hoffman invited Cruise and his sister to attend ‘Death of a Salesman’ and welcomed them backstage after the performance. What could have been an awkward encounter instead marked the beginning of an unexpected friendship.
One Promise Eventually Led To ‘Rain Man’
As Cruise was leaving the theater that evening, Hoffman made a remark that seemed more like polite encouragement than a genuine promise. “As I was leaving, he said, ‘I want to make a movie with you.'”

At the time, Cruise didn’t think much of it. Hollywood is full of conversations that never lead anywhere, and he had no reason to believe this one would be any different. But Hoffman hadn’t forgotten.
“Basically, he sent me, a year later, he sent Rain Man to me,” Cruise said. The screenplay looked nothing like the film that audiences would eventually see. “He sent Rain Man and the script was not the script. My character was like 57 years old, a real old guy.”
As the project evolved, so did Cruise’s role. He ultimately starred as Charlie Babbitt opposite Hoffman’s Raymond in Barry Levinson’s acclaimed drama. Released in 1988, ‘Rain Man’ won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Hoffman, while further cementing Cruise’s status as one of Hollywood’s leading dramatic stars.
Looking back, that career-defining role might never have happened if Cass hadn’t insisted her brother leave his table and introduce himself to one of his acting heroes.
