What Is Hunter Schafer’s Sexuality?
Hunter was born male and later transitioned while she was in ninth grade. She admitted to having come out as gay in seventh grade, after which she experienced gender dysphoria, leading to her realization of her sexual identity. Speaking about this she has said, “After kind of coming to a consensus that this was a real thing, I was put on hormone blockers which pressed the pause button on puberty and gave me time to think about my identity.”
In a powerful essay she wrote for Teen Vogue, Hunter writes, “Every time I use a public bathroom, I have to make a choice: Do I break the law, or do I disregard my comfort and face the risk of harassment and violence? As a 17-year-old transgender girl who began transitioning at 14, I’ve been wrestling with my gender ever since I was a child. At school, I’ve become accustomed to using the women’s restroom, where I feel safest and most comfortable. I’ve finally begun to accept myself as more than what is stated on my birth certificate.”
Speaking about her romantic orientation, Hunter has often expressed her sexuality. In one interview she said she is “closer to what you might call a lesbian”.
Later on, though, she responded to a fan tweet and wrote, “As much as I wish this were true I would like to vaguely clarify that unfortunately I am like bi or pan or something.”
