Television series like ‘How I Met Your Mother‘ and ‘Friends’ have become a comfort space for millions of viewers worldwide. Naturally, the actors of the series also become comfortable with the rhythm of filming. However, it wasn’t without problems.
‘How I Met Your Mother’ actor Jason Segel recently revealed how he was unhappy while filming the final seasons of the show. Here’s why.
Jason Segel Struggled While Shifting From Comedy To Drama
Jason Segel played Marshall Ericksen on ‘How I Met Your Mother‘ and was a beloved character. By the end of the series, each character goes their own way. Marshall and Lily focus on their family. Barney focuses on his daughter and Ted asks out Robin yet again.
After the show ended, Jason was not sure what would be his next step in his career. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do next,” he said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The actor tried his hand at drama but felt unsure about the skills that are required in the genre. Jason said, “I also had no system of prep because you prep differently for comedy. There was a lot of improv in how we came up, and these were big chunks of dialogue.”
Recalling his experience adjusting to post HIMYM world, he said, “I literally just played in my head, ‘What would Edward Norton do?’ I got a dialect coach and I did all these things that I heard you do if you’re a real actor. But man, I was scared.”
Jason then tried to broaden his genre pool during the final seasons of the show. He took up roles in ‘The Five Year Engagement’, ‘This Is 40’, and more.
Jason Segel Didn’t Have Complete Control Over His Career
Change can make you feel like you’re losing control. Jason Segel related the bumps he faced in his career while choosing his next step. He said, “I then had to grapple with why. What’s off about this equation? I think the thing that I was confronted with is that it’s really great to make the decision of ‘F*** it, I do what I want.'”

However, Jason said that simply making a decision is not as easy as it sounds. “But unfortunately, there’s a system of permission in place where people will go, ‘We don’t give a s*** [what you want to do].’ Like, ‘Good for you, man,” he said.
After the show, Jason starred in an Apple TV series, ‘Shrinking’ that was released last year. He co-starred with Harrison Ford.
