‘I’m Glad My Mother Died’ Author Jennette McCurdy Shares Heartbreaking Last Moments With Her Mom

Jennette McCurdy is a famous child star recognized for her role as Sam, in Nickelodeon’s sitcom, ‘iCarly’, in the late 2000s. She got the spotlight recently because of the instant success of her bestselling memoir, ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’. Every memoirist has to go through a difficult process of deciding whether or not to reveal certain events that involve people that are close to them in real life to be mentioned in the memoir.

Most memoirists would advise that if you are writing about a real person who has affected you a lot and you do not want to hurt them, then you probably should wait until they’re dead to reveal about them in the memoir. Jennette McCurdy did just that. After her mother’s death, she revealed shocking events and a not-so-glamorous picture of life in Hollywood through her memoir. In a recent interview, she shared her heartbreaking last moments with her mother.

Last Moments Shared By Jennette McCurdy And Her Mother

Jennette McCurdy and her three brothers were in the hospital to see their mother who was in a coma and has cancer. All of them took turns talking to their mother in whispers, hoping to stir any signs of life. McCurdy’s mother wanted her daughter to reach 89 pounds. So, McCurdy whispered to her mother that she currently weighed 89 pounds.

This one-line monologue although might sound hilarious, it stems from a heartbreak. It signals one of the many instances of mental, physical and emotional abuses McCurdy has suffered at the hands of her mother. This reveals a comprehensive account of what the memoir encapsulates. With her wit, kindness and maturity, McCurdy has handled the memoir with at most complex carefulness that makes it feel so real.

The Complicated Love Between Mother And Daughter

    Jennette McCurdy

Jennette McCurdy reminisces about her hate for acting classes in her childhood days. She also hated that her breasts began to grow after hitting puberty. So, she asked her mother if there is anything that could “stop the boobies from coming.” Her mother then asked her to cut down on calories. Which is one of the main reasons McCurdy was spiraling into anorexia, binge eating, and a protracted struggle with bulimia, as she grew older.

As she rethinks all of her memories with her mother, she does not blasphemies her mother for how she treated McCurdy. She draws on the innocent child’s voice to discern both the wrongness of her mother’s parenting and also the desperate love young McCurdy has for her mother. The complicated love of adoring and fearing mother and missing her and being relieved that she is gone is what McCurdy is going through now. Her confessional tone in her memoir that discerns complex moments of her life has turned out to be an absolute triumph after many struggles for McCurdy.
