There was a tectonic shift in Hollywood’s perception of Johnny Depp after he won the infamous defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard. The actor filed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard after she allegedly defamed him in her 2018 Washington Post op-ed. She countersued him, and consequently, Depp won the lawsuit.
The trial divided the world, and one side was supporting Amber Heard due to the graphic violence that Depp committed. Some people were in support of Johnny Depp. Due to the trial, Johnny lost on many Hollywood projects, was kicked out of a franchise, and lost on brand deals. But, after the trial, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor is reinstating his image in the industry. Recently, he attended a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival for ‘Jeanne du Barry,’ where he expressed his feelings about Hollywood boycotting him.
Johnny Depp Takes A Dig At Warner Bros. For Replacing Him In The ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Franchise
The Cannes Film Festival has begun in full swing on the French Riviera. At the festival, the Johnny Depp-starrer ‘Jeanne du Barry’ premiered during the opening night. The actor plays Louis XV in the film, who falls in love with the beautiful Jeanne du Barry, played by Maïween. In a rare media interaction during the press conference for the film, Depp addressed the boycott he faced during the trial.
During the press conference, Johnny Depp said,“Did I feel boycotted by Hollywood? You’d have to not have a pulse to feel like, ‘No. None of this is happening. It’s a weird joke.'”
Depp took an indirect jibe at Warner Bros. for replacing him in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise. Johnny played the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the film. Mads Mikkelsen replaced him in the third installment of the franchise. Talking about it, he said, “When you’re asked to resign from a film you’re doing because of something that is merely a function of vowels and consonants floating in the air, yes, you feel boycotted.”

The Actor Is Least Bothered By The Boycott By Hollywood
Though the entire industry called for a boycott against Johnny Depp, the fashion luxury brand, ‘Dior,’ stood by him. The brand was pressured into severing ties with the actor, but they held their ground. Now, the brand has signed a $20 million plus deal with Depp for the new Dior Sauvage campaign. It is considered the biggest men’s fragrance deal.
On top of that, he will be foraying into helming after 25 years with ‘Modi.’ The film stars Riccardo Scamarcio in the titular role, along with Al Pacino and Pierre Niney. It is based on a play by Dennis McIntyre. It will follow the life of the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
During the press conference, he talked about how he felt about the whole boycott situation. The ‘City of Lies’ actor said, “I don’t feel boycotted by Hollywood, because I don’t think about Hollywood. It’s a strange, funny time where everybody would love to be able to be themselves, but they can’t. They must fall in line with the person in front of them. If you want to live that life, I wish you the best.”
