Josh Hartnett had to film intimate scenes with both Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson in ‘Verity‘. Now, the actor has opened up about what those moments were really like behind the camera.
According to Hartnett, intimacy coordinators played an important role, but his easy bond with Hathaway and Johnson also helped make the scenes feel much more natural.
Josh Hartnett Opens Up About Filming ‘Verity’s Intimate Scenes

Hartnett plays Jeremy Crawford, the husband of Hathaway’s character Verity Crawford. During an interview on ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis on September 29, he explained how the cast approached some of the movie’s more intimate scenes. Since those moments required a lot of trust, intimacy coordination became an important part of the filming process.
“So intimacy coordination played a big part, but when you’re working with amazing actors and professionals who understand the work and the writ and a director like Michael Showalter who likes to keep things alive and fun on set, we became fast friends, and so all that stuff just felt kind of goofy,” Hartnett said.
Interestingly, the mood behind the scenes was much lighter than the movie itself. Hartnett revealed that the cast often laughed together, which made the experience easier. “We laughed a lot on this set, and if we were ever to make another movie together it would have to be a comedy, but obviously this one is not, so we had to keep a straight face occasionally,” he added.
Hartnett Says Their Chemistry Came Together Like A Puzzle

That comfort also helped when it came to building chemistry on screen. In ‘Verity‘, Johnson plays Lowen, a struggling writer who meets Jeremy Crawford by chance. He later asks her to finish a book series written by his successful but reclusive wife, Verity, after she suffers an accident. However, things quickly take a turn when Lowen discovers another unfinished manuscript by Verity.

As the story unfolds, Hartnett shares sex scenes with both Johnson and Hathaway. Director Michael Showalter, 56, and Hathaway have also teased a steamy makeout scene between the two female leads. Hartnett explained that because the three actors got along so well, they were able to build their chemistry step by step.
“As I said, we got along really well, and when you get along with people, and you have a director who understands what’s needed from you, you can create that chemistry sort of in a way like a puzzle,” Hartnett said. “There are certain things that lead to other things in the narrative that I think build on that chemistry, and we got along really well, so we could play with those dynamics.”
With Verity bringing together a dark story, complicated relationships, and plenty of intense chemistry, the movie already looks set to give Colleen Hoover fans a lot to talk about.
