Anne Hathaway has finally broken her silence on the future of ‘The Princess Diaries 3‘, and her latest update is bound to leave fans feeling both hopeful and a little impatient.
The long-awaited sequel has faced several hurdles since its announcement. Just as things seemed to be falling into place, another unexpected twist altered the timeline once again.
Anne Hathaway Explains Why ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ Is Taking Longer Than Expected

Hathaway shared the latest update on ‘The Princess Diaries 3‘ during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy to promote Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘. During the conversation, she revealed that another big priority has temporarily pushed the long-awaited sequel down her schedule.

“I’m busy making baby number three. And that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make Princess Diaries 3,” Hathaway said. Even though filming has been delayed, she reassured fans that the project has made real progress behind the scenes.
The actress also revealed that the creative team decided to abandon the script they had been developing and take the story in a completely new direction.
“I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction. That is not the update I think anybody wants. But we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”
The Sequel Has Been In Development For Years

Disney first announced plans for ‘The Princess Diaries 3‘ in late 2022. Aadrita Mukerji was initially attached to write the screenplay, while longtime franchise producer Debra Martin Chase returned alongside Melissa Stack. In October 2024, Joy Ride director Adele Lim officially signed on to direct the sequel, and Flora Greeson later joined as the screenwriter.

Hathaway confirmed her return the same day by sharing clips from the original films on social media. “Miracles happen,” she captioned the post. “Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues.”
Earlier this year, Hathaway shared that the sequel remained a top priority despite her packed schedule. “One hundred percent,” she said when asked if the movie was still happening. She explained that ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2‘ unexpectedly took over her schedule, making it impossible to focus on both projects at once.
Meg Cabot added even more excitement during a BookCon appearance in April 2026. The author revealed she has already read the script and confirmed that a castle has already been secured for production. “Anne Hathaway is making a million movies right now. But one of these days, she’s going to go to the castle that we have actually rented and is sitting there waiting.”
Director Adele Lim also hinted at the sequel’s new creative direction in May 2026. She said the film will explore Mia’s life as Queen of Genovia rather than simply revisiting another princess story. “What’s special about this project is all the fans of the original movie are now mothers. There are no wish-fulfillment movies for queens, and that’s what we want to see.”
Even though production still lacks a release timeline, the sequel has finally found the story it wants to tell. Fans may have to wait a little longer before returning to Genovia, but the royal comeback is still very much on the cards.
