Keira Knightley has shared the screen with some of the biggest names in Hollywood throughout her career. Despite that, very few co-stars have earned the kind of admiration she once expressed while reflecting on one of her most celebrated films, Pride & Prejudice.’ In fact, she didn’t hesitate to describe its leading man Matthew Macfadyen as an absolute “sensational actor.”

The praise didn’t come after years of working together on three films or following the success of the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen‘s novel. Instead, it stemmed from a moment during the casting process that completely changed Knightley’s expectations and helped shape one of the most beloved literary romances ever put on screen.

While promoting ‘Pride & Prejudice,’ Knightley recalled first hearing about Macfadyen before meeting him in person. She had already seen his stage work and admired his performances on television, leaving little doubt about his talent.

“It was amazing. He’s absolutely a sensational actor,” Knightley said. “I saw him on stage, and he was mind-blowing.” Even with that admiration, she admitted she initially struggled to picture him opposite Elizabeth Bennet.

“I met him, and he was lovely, and I still couldn’t imagine it,” she confessed. The shadow of Colin Firth’s iconic Mr. Darcy still lingered over every audition, making it difficult to separate the character from the version audiences already loved.

But everything changed when Knightley and Macfadyen performed Darcy’s famous proposal scene together. “We read the famous proposal scene in the rain, and it just worked,” she said. That single audition convinced both Knightley and director Joe Wright that they had found the chemistry the film needed.

Joe Wright later explained that he wasn’t looking for another Colin Firth. Instead, he wanted actors who could build their own interpretation of Jane Austen’s famous romance. According to Knightley, the production auditioned several talented actors before Macfadyen stood out.

“We did a lot of auditions with different Darcys, and they were all fantastic. But there was that one thing or another that hadn’t quite clicked.” What ultimately separated Macfadyen wasn’t something written into the screenplay.

“It wasn’t in the script or anything like that,” Knightley explained. “It’s just what naturally happened when we were playing the scene in the room.” That chemistry carried into the finished film, which became both a critical and commercial success.

It earned Knightley her first Academy Award nomination at just 20 years old while introducing Macfadyen to a global audience. The collaboration also marked the beginning of Knightley’s long creative partnership with Joe Wright, who later cast her in ‘Atonement’ and ‘Anna Karenina.’

Meanwhile, Macfadyen ended up working Knightley on two more projects after ‘Pride & Prejudice.’ These were ‘Anna Karenina’ (2012) and ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ (2018).

Nearly twenty years later, Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy remains one of the most celebrated interpretations of the character, proving Knightley’s first impression of her “sensational” co-star was right all along.
