The eldest son of Matthew McConaughey, Levi, has officially turned 18, and the proud father marked the milestone with more than just a sweet birthday photo.
As Levi steps into adulthood while also building his own Hollywood career, the Oscar winner shared a very blunt message about enjoying his new freedom without forgetting the responsibility that comes with it.
Matthew McConaughey And Camila Took Years To Give Levi More Freedom

McConaughey celebrated Levi’s 18th birthday on Tuesday by sharing a photo of the pair together. The 56-year-old actor wrote: “18. That’s a #buddy. Enjoy and handle your new freedoms. @levimcconaughey.” Matthew and Levi matched in light blue dress shirts and jeans, stood with one arm around each other, and made the “rock on” hand gesture with their other hands. The birthday tribute came after Matthew recently enjoyed a rare red carpet appearance with his entire family.

Levi’s move into adulthood also arrives as he starts making a name for himself in Hollywood. The aspiring actor made his acting debut alongside his father in “The Lost Bus,” released last year, and he can soon be seen in the drama “Way of the Warrior Kid.” Matthew shares Levi with his wife of 14 years, Camila Alves. The couple welcomed him in 2008 and also have 16-year-old daughter Vida and 13-year-old son Livingston.
Matthew’s latest advice about handling freedom also connects to an earlier decision he and Camila made when Levi turned 15 in July 2023. The parents allowed him to join Instagram as a birthday gift, but Camila admitted she felt “nervous” about letting their eldest son enter the social media world.
Before the big reveal, Matthew said: “Happy birthday Levi Alves McConaughey. Can you believe it? Fifteen years young.” He then explained the gift directly to his son, saying: “Hey, buddy, your mom is a little nervous today. One of the gifts we’re giving you, yes, we are allowing you today to join the social media universe.“
Matthew Has Long Trusted Levi To Handle His Own Path

The married couple admitted they had discussed the decision for years, starting when Levi was 12. Many of his friends already had accounts, but Matthew and Camila chose to wait. Camila said: “All his friends have had it for a long time. We’ve been holding up.” Matthew explained why they finally trusted Levi with the new freedom, adding: “He knows who he is, and he knows where he’s going. I think he can handle it. He’s got a great story to tell and share.”

Matthew also had a personal message for anyone planning to follow his son online. The actor said: “I want y’all to know, you’re getting a very cool and respectful young man in Levi McConaughey, and I hope y’all can do your best to treat him the same way. Levi, enjoy the adventure, enjoying telling your story, expressing yourself and what you put out there and the exchange you get with people out there.”
Matthew and Camila ended the video with applause as they said together: “Happy birthday, go check him out.” Levi quickly responded to his parents’ post about an hour later, writing: “Mamma and Papai thank you!” He also shared a video montage on his own feed showing his interests, including surfing, cliff diving, skiing, volunteer work, and spending time with friends and family. He captioned it, “happy to be here.”
Now, Levi is entering a whole new stage of his life. He is 18, taking on more acting roles, and starting to build his own place in Hollywood. Matthew’s advice may have been short and blunt, but the message was clear. He wants his son to enjoy his new freedom while also knowing how to handle it.
