Penélope Cruz has opened up about a terrifying health scare that made her believe she was about to die. 

The actress faced the frightening experience while filming ‘The Black Ball‘. And she has now shared an even more worrying detail about the health alarms she has dealt with over the years.

In an interview with Porter magazine published July 6, Cruz revealed details of her near-death experience during the Cannes Film Festival in May. The 52-year-old said she was working on ‘The Black Ball‘ when she suddenly received alarming news about a possible brain aneurysm.

We’re about to go out, I was putting on my wig, and they said, ‘Oh, apparently you have some brain aneurysm,’” Cruz recalled on stage at the film’s festival screening. “I thought I was about to die. This is something that was totally surreal in my life.”

The actress took the evening off after the frightening news. However, her doctor later cleared her to return to filming. Cruz felt deeply relieved after learning she could continue working. “I thought, ‘It’s a total miracle,’” Cruz explained. “I have to, I must have this in me.”

The Actress Says She Has Faced “Many” Similar Scares

Cruz has now revealed that the brain aneurysm alarm was not the only frightening health scare she has faced. “I have had many scares like that,” Cruz admitted. “Fortunately, I’m fine, it was a false alarm, but I worry about staying healthy, taking care of myself.”

Those scares have made health a major priority for the Pirates of the Caribbean star. “I don’t drink,” she continued. “I don’t smoke. And, I really don’t party. Without health, we have nothing. You want to talk about real equality? Why don’t we start with health?

The experience also helped Cruz connect more deeply with her role as cabaret dancer Nené and the people working around her. Maybe that’s why health matters so much to her. After facing “many” scares and once thinking she was about to die, the actress now wants to take care of herself and stay healthy.
