The global cinema community is mourning the unexpected loss of Sam Neill, who passed away at 78. His family broke the news on Monday, adding that the doctors declared him cancer-free recently after his 2022 diagnosis with a type of blood cancer.

In the cinema world, Neill graced our screens for five decades with a rich filmography loved by audiences worldwide. The role that struck a chord with millions, including kids, is undeniably Dr. Alan Grant from the original Jurassic Parkfranchise. Following his passing, director Steven Spielberg shared an emotional message, reflecting on their friendship and time together on the set of the 1993 adventure drama.

In a statement to Variety, Spielberg expressed grief over Sam’s death and thanked directors Roger Donaldson, Gilliam Armstrong, Graham Baker, and Phillip Noyce for casting the actor in brilliant roles that drew Spielberg’s attention and led him to cast Neill as Dr. Grant in ‘Jurassic Park.’

He was referring to Neill’s performances in movies such as ‘Sleeping Dogs,’ ‘My Brilliant Career,’ ‘The Final Conflict,’ and ‘Dead Calm.’ “Sam was exceptionally collaborative,” Spielberg said, before revealing why Neill’s onscreen role stood miles apart from his actual personality.

“It was a stretch for him to play a character who acted as though children were messy and smelly because this was the opposite of the loving father he was to his children.”

“I adored making all the ‘Jurassic’ movies with him. Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our ‘Jurassic’ family, and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world,”
the director added. Meanwhile, co-star Laura Dern also penned a sweet note for the late actor.

Laura Dern initially appeared alongside Sam Neill as paleobotanist Ellie Sattler, beautifully balancing his character’s grumpiness. After garnering a massive fan following from the first movie, the duo reprised their roles in ‘Jurassic Park III’ (2001) and ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ (2022).

Reflecting on Neill’s loss, Dern described him as a “lifetime loyal friend.” She added, “He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness and love always with the driest of wit. He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.”

Meanwhile, the actor’s death took many by surprise, taking into account his recent positive announcement about his health condition. In a statement on Monday, his family revealed that the passing was “sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free.”

Besides his prehistoric adventures in Spielberg’s iconic universe, Neill’s impressive filmography includes ‘Possession,’ ‘The Hunt for Red October,’ and the award-winning movie ‘The Piano,’ as well as the successful television series ‘Merlin’ and ‘Peaky Blinders.’
