Saoirse Ronan revealed that she is not keen on doing a Marvel film, and would rather take up other “big movies” instead. The ‘Little Woman’ actor has set herself apart in the Hollywood industry with her unique portfolio of roles. Interestingly, Ronan’s idea to avoid Marvel came after she was rejected for the role of Yelena Belova.
Yelena Belova is a Russian spy in the Marvel comics, trained in the Red Room like Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow. Florence Pugh was cast as Yelena in 2021’s ‘Black Widow‘ and action series, ‘Hawkeye‘. Earlier, Ronan had disclosed that she has not yet recovered from being turned down by ‘Harry Potter‘. Here’s what she said about her Marvel rejection.
Saoirse Ronan Was Turned Down For A Role In Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’
Appearing for an episode on the ‘Happy Sad Confused‘ podcast, Saorse Ronan was caught off guard by host Josh Horowitz he asked her about her rejection by Natvel. “Did you almost play Yelena in the ‘Black Widow’? Was that a discussion?” the host asked. Amazed, Ronan asked in turn, “How did you hear about that?” Later, the actor comically replied, “I don’t know.”

Seeing Ronan’s old co-star, Florence Pugh play Yelena in the Marvel Universe, we can safely assume Saoirse did not land the role. Horowitz laughingly said, “I’ll take that non-answer as an answer.”
Previously, Saoirse has stated that she was also turned down for the role of Luna Lovegood in the ‘Harry Potter’ series. She stated, “I think the one that stayed with me over the years.” However, the ‘Lady Bird’ actor did not look too disappointed over the loss of the Marvel gig.
Saoirse Ronan Would Prefer To Do A James Bond Film Over Marvel Movies
Befor her comment on the Marvel rejection, Saoirse Ronan discussed her potential and desire to work in a ‘James Bond’ film. She told Horowitz, “I can’t see myself doing Marvel. I don’t know. I would prefer to do Bond.”
However, Saoirse clarified that she does not hold any grudges against Marvel. Horowitz glossed over the fact that the actor would willingly choose over the massive sci-fi production.

“There’s nothing wrong with them [Marvel] and I think they’re brilliant films. I want to do more big movies,” Ronan said.
She continued, “I’m at the point where I’ve done… I love making independent film, I really do, but to know — especially in this landscape that we’re in, in film right now — to know that a film is going to be seen is such a luxury.”
